It can't. The Gaia theory is a point of view, more akin to religion than science. No reputable scientist takes it seriously, but as a way of instilling reverence for the earth and its beautiful complexity, it does little harm.

James Lovelock provided the proof using the Daisyworld model showing how the feedback mechanisms of living organisms interacts with the climate. Also backed up with lots of field research.
this is based his work with nasa observing that in the Mars' environment all oxygen has combined with iron to the lowest chemical energy level (hence red colour).
Then asking why this is not the case on earth. and the answer is that there are a large number of feedback systems between living organisms and their environment which by natural evolution tend to produce and maintain the optimum environmental conditions for life which include high levels of free oxygen, (but not so high as to cause spontaneous combustion etc).
The question must be why was there ever a theory (religeous or scientific) assuming everything is independent and disconnected, which would require some devine agency to constantly interrvene keep everything in balance?

All life on this planet is made up of dimensional different life forms upon other bigger ones, little life living on bigger life ,this works if we zoom downwards ,so it stands to reason the same principle continues if we zoom upwards ,the next dimension being the planet itself and so this must also be a life form.with its own intelligence.
And has its laws for behavior,THE LAWS OF NATURE
One of these is the law of harmony ,all species are welcome ,but excess is not permitted.
When this happens Nature reacts with plagues, disease, predators some even think Natural disasters like earth quakes or volcanic eruptions, this applies to all forms of life,in the flora and fauna,And history hints maybe us as well.
Hinting at an intelligence that is interactive with life forms coming from the outside
North American Natives have always been aware of these forces and call it Manitoe.
In Europe we call it Gaia and all wizardry, hocus pocus etc were attempts to utilize these forces.
THE WIND
There are species of a spider that stick their bum in the air ,and let of a strand of silk which acts as a parachute and with a certain wind current these spiders change location,
There are many different groups using the same method,The remarkable thing is that of all these different groups ,the spiders always end up with their own group,How does a particular spider know which piece of wind is for his family, where is the intelligence???
Birds migrate thousands of miles across the planet by hopping on to airflows that go to their destinations ,How do they know which air current is theirs??
THE WATER
there is a distant cousin of the salmon which lays its eggs in rock pools far up the beach, only 2 waves a year ,with the spring tides ,go far enough to reach those pools.
These fish hang out waiting for this wave and when it comes they are on it and move up to the pools ,How do they know which wave is the biggest,Their eggs develop with in 3 weeks just in time to take the second biggest wave back into the sea.How do the eggs know the timing of their development ,Where is the Intelligence,??
------------------------------------------------------------
Nature is packed with thousands of examples of this type of phenomena, undoubtedly many will say oh that is God meaning Jehovah, but Jehovah supposedly works alone and hates Pagans ,And this is an interactive Pagan concept that was operative way before Jehovah was even thought of.
Rudolph Steiner reckoned that the intelligence is in the planet`s ,nervous and digestive system namely the body of Water and Air that surrounds the planet and which is part of everything that lives.
And that this is heavily influenced and interactive with the cosmic bodies that are in our vicinity.
Intelligence lurking within the elements and influenced by the planets, has been the basis of religions all over this planet since the beginning of Humanity.
Gaia is a complex concept and this is just part of the explanation.

In a nutshell, the gaia theory is a shown as a giant interconnected feedback system. Although it would be difficult to prove the earth to be one large self regulating system(as one organism and not interacting systems). we can see bits and pieces of it in our everyday lives. For example, our bodies exhibit negative feedbacks in which our body temperature is regulated, the same goes for the earth. The sun heats up the planet and the heat gets distributed to the poles, keeping everything in a relatively constant and predictable state. There certainly is more evidence to prove Gaia than disprove it.

The Gaia Theory is the basis of most Earth Sciences. It is widely accepted that ecosystems exist based on nutrition cycles, i.e. plants turn solar energy into chemical energy which is used partly by animals and their waste streams are converted to raw materials for plants by vermin and bacteria (vermiculture and composting); a life based cycle. In addition raw materials (minerals provided from nonorganic sources) provide essential building blocks of life.
If you know of Permaculture, that is Gaian Theory at work, as is Biomimicry, Sustainable Development and a number of other scientific and economic programs.
The original, ancient equivalent would be Druidism I suppose, but Gaianism is not based on faith, it is a theory based on observation which is being proven every day.
I prefer to call it Deep Ecosocial Egalitarianism myself (look up another Theory called "Deep Ecology"). That is another theory which looks more closely at the economics of Environmentalism and Ecology.

It is the Gaia hypothesis, not the Gaia theory.
In science, a theory is a mathematical or logical explanation, or a testable model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation.
But a hypothesis is only a suggested explanation for a phenomenon or of a reasoned proposal suggesting a possible correlation between multiple phenomena.

That one is going to be tough. It probably will wait until we have been able to explore other planets in the universe with life, close up.
No way has it been disproved, though. Plenty of reputable scientists take it seriously. Does anyone claim James Lovelock is not reputable? He has a number of peer reviewed articles on the subject, which indicates the peer reviewers also take it seriously.

technological know-how can no longer instruct that something no longer to point God for that rely does no longer exist, you in uncomplicated terms cant instruct a unfavorable. as on your theory on darkish suckers evaluate this: if "the darkness" become heavier than "the sunshine" it could be drawn into black holes in life, such because of the fact the only between your ears, at a faster value and the universe we see and stay in would be packed with sunshine. to objective this, next time you pass a depressing closet stick your head in and focus. God Bless

It cannot be proved, it is not a theory in the scientific sense, more like a religion or philosophical position.

I don't think it's meant to be proved, that would as greater misunderstanding as trying to prove God exists, or disprove it for that matter. It is a philosophical model of nature, something alot easier to understand than GW theory, at least for those of a type of intelligence more suited.
