There are basically two reasons.
1) Our society originated as a patriarchal one. This essentially means that men made the rules. This is a result.
2) There are too many women that allow this kind of behavior to continue. They look at relationship as a prize to be won, and they will go after any man, even the bad ones, claiming that the "right woman" can change him. This just encourages this illicit behavior.
These attitudes have changed a lot over the years, but I do not think that it will go away in my lifetime. Just keep to your standards and you will find a man who does not think this way.

It's called a double standard. Men can do it, women can't. Been that way since time began. Doesn't make it right, but that's the way it is.

reguardless of the term associated with the cheater, he or she is still less likely to be trusted/accepted by his/her next boyfriend/gf should said bf/gf become aware of said activity. Basically reguardless of your title, the oppisite sex will treat you the same. Guys think that getting some is the ultimate goal, girls thing that becomming emotionally attached is the ultimate goal, hence the difference in the titles.
in summary: it's the same... but different

I think the perception varies from person to person. Not all people look at it that way.
