Much of it is subliminal messaging with a tad of mass hypnosis. See how Darren Brown does it here:

No, at least my church isn't.
I've been to many churches; each are different. Some are dry as dead bones and boring. Others are alive(spiritually) and exciting.
However, hypnosis is a process in which one puts someone else into a trance-like state.
I think its a low jab to call church hypnosis, or brainwashing.
Church is a place to learn about Christ, meet fellow believers, and worship God; it is not, as you say, a mindless hypnosis session, in which everyone is nodding their head and drooling.
God bless,

Hypnosis is an unfortunate word because it is so misunderstood.
I will say that there is an awful lot of trance formation going on im most services.
I do not mean droning preachers putting everybody to sleep either.
I mean active and deliberate induction of trance states in peoples mental patterns.
It is an important part of the music selection, it determines the pace and variation of the voice roll. Even the tuning of the PA for tone and volume.
I will try to find some referrences and post them.

In the RC church, at least in Europe, they have a seperate set format for each day/date of the year, including the hymns, the readings from the bible, and the subject of the sermon. So on the same day of each year, you have exaclty the same service, with possibly slight variations of the sermon.
I dont call that hypnosis, I call it brain-washing

No. Rituals and repetition can be freeing to the mind, opening it up for meditation, thought, opening one's spiritual side. Religion is man's attempt to explain the unexplainable, to understand the nonunderstandable, to make sense of the universe and life and our place in it. Religion is an attempt to understand and explain rules for living.

In a sense, many are. Some control their congregations so entirely that they are no longer able to think for themselves. These are cults. I think for myself and expect divine guidance which happens regularly. I only need to remain open.

I prefer the words "monotonous", "repetitive" and "mindless".
Although when the priest swings that silly incense thing back and forth it is a bit hypnotic.
