You could still be religious and have all the happy religious faith all you want. You just would never be able to go to church for any reason or pray ever again. And if you are really worried about it, just ask for forgiveness and you would still be able to go to heaven (assuming religion is correct).

Don't worry about your soul people. You will still have it. Besides, getting paid $500 million dollars for such a simple request would probably be uplifting for your soul.

Oh, and you couldn't spend it to build more churches. Or anything church related.

Of course. You could do an ermous amount fo good for the unfortunates of this world with that sort of money. Any Christian who says no, is clearly not prepared to sacrifice themselves for that and thus not follow Christs example.

You should therefore be ashamed!

I'd take it. Bank some, invest some, live pretty much as we are now, but travel more. I would probably do volunteer work for a good cause after a while. 1/2 million dollars is certainly nothing to turn down -- it takes a long time to make that kind of money Oh, $1,000,000! Definitely no doubts about that!

YES-and you know why? just because that I consider that my soul is my church and nobody can see if I'm praying or not(only God). And I could do a lot of good things with so much money.
But if for such money someone would ask me to kill somebody-I wouldn't do it.

I would take it and ask my son to pray for both of us. I don't think this would change my relationship with God. I would probably use some of the money for church and the homeless as a showing of good faith. This is a good question though with very interesting answers.

Give it to me I could renovate a Church for homeless people to live in. Churches take up too much space where homes could be built. Surely someone of faith would offer me their Church to do this.

And it would know longer be a Church, just a comfortable safe basic home.

That would be turning my back on God an all that Ihold to be dear. I could no more sell my faith for money than one of my children. And we are fairly well entrenched in the low to middle class and could really use the money. I cannot take money with me when I go anyway, but I could certainly lose my soul which is priceless.

No.

Religion is fundamentally about community. I've heard the analogy of church as a hospital where even the doctors are sick, but everyone helps each other.

In order to learn to love, you have to know what community is. Without community, you can have that vain shadow of love that is narcissism, and you can know what it is to have affection for family members. But true compassion and agape is developed by sharing community and fellowship with anyone and everyone.

That is what church excels at doing. We Catholics have a strong codification of community in that the consecration of our Eucharist (communion) is usually done at a communal celebration, with the priest celebrating, and the congregation offering its prayers for what he is doing. As such, we call communion the symbol of our unity - it is the literal body of Christ, and we are the mystical body of Christ. We are supposed to be his limbs acting in the world.

Now, obviously we can't do that if we're not working together and coordinating what we do out in the world.

So no - with your five hundred million dollar gift, the heart of my faith vanishes from me. I might as well have sold my soul, for I would now no longer have the ability to effectively be a Christian.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19-20)

I'll take a mere $20 million to skip church three times a year on non-holiday weekends

Why do people think that money would encourage or be reason enough to give up ANY PART of our faith or belief system? No, there is no amount of money you could offer, no threat that you could make, that would cause me to give up, denounce, or turn from any part of my religious belief. And as far as your statement that you could just ask for forgiveness later, no we couldn't because that would amount to prayer which would be strictly forbidden under your rules!

No. Prayer and church are worth much more than that. Suppose I did that, and then because I never pray or go to church, I lost my boldness to share my faith, and 50 people who would have otherwise been saved end up going to hell. Is that worth $500,000,000? How about if it was only one person? How much is that worth? What if that person was you?
