it is referred to as "peeking the signal levels". for satellites the set up is:
1. focal point, the distance from the face of the dish to the feed horn of the LNB.
2. elevation & declination, at what vertical height in the sky and the relationship to the equater your location.
3. azmith, the direction east or west in the sky.
4. skew, this applies to the lattest 5 LNB dishes.
having the ruff numbers and settings loose, using a spectrum anylizer to peek the "hay stack" levels by physically moving the dish in small incorments. then lock down.

for an antenna, determine the point of "off-air" broad cast. (ex: for the greater los angles area it is mt. wilson) then aim the anetenna in that particular direction. using a field strenght meter "peek out" that signal level, by turning the antenna right to left then left to right until you reach the best signal levels. ( ch#'s 2-13 are uhf and all others are vhf.)

that should about cover it!

My Dish brand system has a built-in locator. You use the Dish remote control to enter a menu system. One of the menu options is the locator function. Enter the zip-code and the locator function lists 3 settings: azimuth, elevation, and skew.

On the roof of the house, the antenna should be leveled, and the az. and el. set on the antenna mount (there are engraved tick marks on the mount in 1 degree increments). There is also a place to set the skew.

If the mount is put on the roof, level, and if the house is set on a N-S-E-W rectangle, then a signal should be present at the receiver.

If this is to do with Freeview then go to the freeview site and do a search on a postcode in the relevant area .....this will then load up an option for the overview for freeview access. If you click on trade then it will give a breakdown of the Antenna used and direction.....This is for aerial installations

Quicker way to access is to go to Digital UK go to the postcode checker....and at the top of the page on a tab it says Trade View...click on this and it will give the locations needed
