O + is the most common blood type -- therefore it is always in high demand... You can donate blood every 8 weeks - the blood bank keeps track of your donations and only starts to call when you become elegible to donate. You either have not donated in the past 8 weeks or you are being contacted by a different blood bank that is unaware of your last donation.

O Positive Blood Type Facts

O Pos is not rare. But, the reason that they want you to continue donating is because all Positive blood types can receive O Pos. I don't want to say they don't need the people with rare blood types to donate, but there would be no use in having a lot of donors that are AB Pos when only AB Pos people can receive that blood.

Actually, It depends on what places you're talking about.
If it's about the UK, so that means yep It's really popular.
In fact, O+ Blood is not rare neither common.
It's common in some areas of the World, but if you compare or estimate the population of people with O positive, that would be so a small society.

I hope I've helped!! :)

Blood Type Rarity

No, in the UK it is the most common blood type with 37% having that blood group. (I assume it is the same in the US)

Having a popular blood group is perhaps why they want your blood, because there will be lots of people needing that type of blood.

I read somewhere that it is safe to give blood once every 12 weeks but they (in the UK) only ask once every 16 weeks.

They are probably sending you loads of spam through the mail to get you as a regular donar.

How can the blood bank be houding u every week? they should hound you every 3-4 mths. a person cant keep donating!

Anyways... O Pos is not a rare type. In fact it is the most common. Therefore they will need more stocks of it. Blood grp O is the most universal as it can be transfused to the other blood grps. However, because of the Pos (ie Rhesus Grp) it may not be suitable for all. a full antigen typing may be required. in order not to have a hemolytic effect (immune response) on the transfused patient.

It's the most common type, but O is very popular with the blood bank people, so they'll continue. No good deed goes unpunished.
