I've just read the answers above, excuse me for a moment - to get control of my gag reflex.
Faith - in the truest sense of the word (not religious drivel) - is NOT valuable, it just is. It is descriptive of how consciousness operates and intersects with our experience of reality. Every adept who has ever lived has observed that we literally 'live by faith.' This has nothing to do with mysterious religious nonsense.
The mind/body system stores every 'defining moment' as emotional electrochemistry at the cellular level and these experiences - which trigger defensive responses - become the beliefs that ultimately control our perception and experience of the world.
Every religion, at its core, offers a psychological path/way to transcend this 'conditioned faith' and replace it with one's authentic nature. Of course if one believes consciousness does not evolve and this one body is all that counts, you could be easily seduced by the idea of an afterlife even if it comes with a 'burning lake of fire' if you're bad.
The reason people continue personifying deity and have such sentimental ideas about faith is that most of them have experienced (or want to believe) in the consequences of a "state of unconflictedness." It is real. It just can't be mastered by their superficial approach. But, most have no interest in anything deeper. They have found their level.

There was once a wise man who was held to be the holder of the universal truth. Many people of all different faiths sought his council. One day he invited 3 different people of diverse religious understandings together. Before the 3 began to question the wise man he ordered tea for all. Each of the 3 had an individual server bring a cup and tea pot on a tray. At the wise mans order the servers began to pour the tea into the cups. As the cups became full the servers continued to pour so that the tea overflowed onto the trays. The 3 quickly pointed out that the cups overflowed, where upon the wise man instructed the servers to stop.
"Now" said the wise man, "If you consider your cup of knowledge to be full, then the words that I speak will spill out and be lost to you. Therefore only those who know that their cups are not full may stay and listen."
All of the 3 stayed and learned from the wise man. His words transformed their hearts.
Only continue reading if you consider your cup of knowledge in this matter not to be full.

If you don't want to call it faith,it's OK because the word gives many connotations to people differently, specially related to religious faiths. A faith can be roughly explained as a degree of assurance about a person, event ,an outcome or for that matter about anything.Like, when we leave home to go for work,we ensure that the things which we shall require on return to our place of living, are in place or available. We do it on the assumed basis of the assurance that we shall return to our place(though there is not surety of it ).Now if we expand the theme of such an assumed assurance to our real life situations, wouldn't that be akin to a kind of faith? In short,it would become impossible to live a life if we don't have such assumed assurances.Let it not be a faith but it still has the same dimensions, roles and purposes. So,if it's so important then it can be valuable. If we don't want to accept it's value,it doesn't really matter. The fact of the matter stays, what if we don't want it with a specific name tab.

The parallel you draw between faith and gullibility is an interesting one. I think that no definition, explanation or opinion will do you any good because there is some ideology in your mind that will not allow for a concept without concrete evidence. In that case, you will never know faith. I would be interested to know if you believe that you have a spirit or soul.
As for me, Faith is my way of attuning my spirit with the life force of the universe.

Faith is just that... belief without proof. When faced with the uncertainty of the world it would be impossible to try to reason out the insanity. I believe in a loving God who would not give more than can be handled - so when faced with a situation that seems unbearable, it gives me peace to "know" that while I don't have all the reasons, there is a higher purpose for all the events in my life and the lives of others.
With Faith - I don't have to understand the reasons, knowing they are there gives me a great deal of inner peace. It's the inner peace that is a valuable trait and faith is the vehicle in which I travel.

When you get up everymorning do you expect to come home that night? Do you believe the sun will rise each day? Of course you do, you have faith in the sun coming up everymorning and the sun going down every evening. Now if you didn't believe the sun was coming up in the morning what would you do? If you didn't believe you were going to not make it home tonight what would you do. Think about, Faith is a valuable trait. It helps us survive in this world. The Bible says to look up and know that I am God. Christians have faith that the Bible is the true word of God, the creator of the universe. When you get born again and saved your faith will start to grow and pretty soon things that you used to worry about will no longer bother you. I have faith that if I live one day at a time for Jesus he will take care of me. That doesn't mean everything is going to go perfect, that means that inside of me I am at peace. And that is something somebody can take from me. Peace. Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord. You can to do, just pray this simple sinners Prayer believing, Dear Jesus, I know and confess that I am sinner in need of salvation. I believe you died on a cross at calvery and arose from the grave to wash away my sins, I ask you right now to come into my heart and save me, I pray this Prayer believing in the name of Jesus Amen. If you prayed this prayer with a sincere heart you are now a child of God, rejoice that your name is written in the Lambs book of Life. Jesus will now send his Holy Spirit to come and live in your heart and guide you into all truth. If you have any questions just send me an email, God Bless YOU!!

If you live in the world of duality, faith is one side of the same coin and not knowing on the other. You can pick and chose by reasons of your evidence. Trust is nearer the truth because it requires no evidence. Focus on who it is asking the question and the truth will be revealed.

faith is a feeling, a knowing of something to be true whether or not you see it or can touch it; we believe that there are planets although we can't see it with our own eyes nor feel it with our own hands; the world, space and universe is vast; we as man cannot create it or explain it , we try but fail, faith is felt in your heart and your life; if you really want to experience it ; give up all question and ask God to show you; don't put a timeline on it b/c God knows the time and place and just be patient; he will make himself and faith known to you that is beyond words and our comprehension ; when he enlightens you and he will, you will be amazed

I believe that the world is round but I have never been in space to observe it. But I believe in NASA and the astronauts and science. I believe that we will die but science says take these pills to extend life but I know nothing works forever. I believe we have not found the beginning to infinity because we never will. I believe we live in our own little world with a tinny, tiny, little mind and God is infinite and way beyond any man made explanation.
So my faith is one of awe and belief in the history of early man meeting God in a basic way. I believe in the fulfillment of the biblical history when it for-told the coming of a Christ to save the world. So put a value to your belief and see which one you will hold onto at your time of death. I pray for you to choose the faith to believe and trust in God and his promises.
See God's plan in all you do today and trust in His voice and you will find your faith permeating your sense of uncertainty.
