To make morality and ethics completely dependent on religion is a major mistake, especially if it's all about punishment and reward. Children need to know how to make moral decisions, and that involves looking at the facts, estimating the possible consequences of each available choice, and measuring all against some general principles which are sufficiently well understood to be of value. That's NOT what they get in Sunday school, believe me. My mother was a Methodist Sunday school teacher for most of her life.

One of the reasons I like the Ethical Culture movement so much is that it is an excellent way to raise good kids. I mean good in the sense that they really want to do what is right, and they have the skills to make those decisions. They learn to trust the judgment of their elders partly because the adults explain the why of things, and don't just cite a rigid set of rules. Then they gradually start making their own decisions, to the point where they can be trusted in one area of their lives after another. They quickly discover the advantages of being trusted, and they are citizens we can all be proud of by the time they are old enough to vote.

This sounds like a question from a homework assignment.

If so, please share your grade with me so I can get at least PARTIAL credit. OK?

If not, this message will self-destruct in 5 seconds. (But whose counting, anyway?)

Teaching that morality is subjective, and everybody has the right to choose what's "right" for themselves. Now THAT is miseducation in the issue of morality. That is to say, "no absolutes!" - this is deadly wrong - a lie straight from the very pits of hell itself.

Now, what's my grade looking like so far? :-D

I will give you an example. Islam and Xianity state that homosexuality is a sin. But they miseducate when they claim it is immoral.

It is not immoral. It is a sin in those religions. They are not the same.

To use a crappy analogy, I think it is like hearing a song you like and interpreting it in your own way that seems pertinent to your current situation. Suddenly you find out the writer meant something totally different and the song makes no sense and you can't believe how wrong you were. If you don't have education in Biblical studies then the Bible is wide open to misinterpretation and personal bias, possibly leading to a very unethical view.
