You really don't want to be looking for specific models but instead just anything that is in the category you want (i.e. small car for ¤?) and then buying based on condition and maintenance history (though staying away from cars and makes known to have problems) and with such things as transmission type (provided you can drive a manual), colour and body style being secondary. You seem to live in the UK so you should be able to do without air conditioning and with small cars could probably do without power steering (you'll know when you test drive it if you need it for that car).
Some people seem to think that BMW and the like are a good idea but they really aren't because the maintenance costs are higher, if you're a young driver without much money you may find yourself unable to keep such a car on the road (they are intended for those who earn a lot of money).
Another thing is that insurance companies often charge more to insure 2 and 3 door vehicles so they may end up a false economy.

It's a bit different in Europe - Japanese cars are pricey but I still would suggest a Civic. Just make sure it's not made in UK - no offense but British cars are the worst even if made by a reputable manufacturer not to mention some jaguar or rover.

Here are some of my favorites: Chevrolet Cavalier, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla or Camry, Dodge or Plymouth Neon...these are all great on gas. My first vehicle was a 1986 Chevy S10 truck...it was totally awesome and I loved it...but it got like 17mpg lol.

A Toyota Corolla is a good first car. Even if it has a few miles, it will still keep going. They are affordable and give you many miles of good service.
I must tell you that I've not owned one and this comes from hearing rave reviews from people who have owned one.

Kia Spectra. Handles well, just like any 4-door sedan. Gets good gas milage, has a smaller engine and are easy to maintain. Cute little cars.

ANY TOYOTA VEHICLES. THEY R DEPENDABLE, CHEAP TO MAINTAIN,AND EASY ACCESS FOR THE MECHANIC TO WORK ON THE VEHICLE WHICH CUT DOWN ON LABOR COST. ALL OTHERS R UNRELIABLE, NOT EASY FOR THE MECHANIC TO WORK ON, TOO EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN IT. DO NOT GET FANCY WHEELS SINCE YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW HOURS OF DRIVING EXPERIENCE. IT TAKES YEARS TO BE A GOOD DRIVER. I HAVE SEEN ALOT OF DRIVERS SCRATCH THEIR 500.00 WHEEL. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!!

Toyota Camry. It gets great gas mileage, safe, reliable, and it can be pretty sporty too.
