Raw chicken pieces are great for any dog. For a GSD you would probably be looking at at least half a chicken to make sure that it gets crunched and swallowed properly. Especially if he is used to gulping kibble.

Don't let the scaremongering about bacteria get to you. What these people don't understand is that a dog's digestive system is designed to eat prey and carrion. The stomach acids are really strong and any bacteria that do get through this are then passed out through the dog's very short intestinal tract. 37% of ALL dogs, regardless of diet, will pass salmonella in their faeces - the huge majority will no ill effect whatsoever. Just don't play with or eat the poo :-)

This short digestive tract is another reason why dogs should NOT be fed grains, vegetables or dairy. Herbivores and omnivores (like us) have amylase in their mouths to start digesting carbohydrates, molars for crushing cellulose and a long twisting intestinal tract to enable them to gain the maximum nutrition from plant material. Dogs being CARNIVORES do not have these - this is a physiological fact!!

Feeding your dog is not the complicated scientific exercise that manufacturers would have us all believe. Think of it as providing a carcass for your animal. The basic guide is to feed about 70-80% raw meat (chunks not ground), 10-15% edible bone and 10-15% offal (about half being liver). This is worked out over a week or two so it really not hard.

Feeding raw can be a good choice for any breed of dog, but should never be fed in combination with kibble. It's safest to stick to one or the other - it's very, very hard on a dog's stomach to constantly switch back and forth.

If you don't mind the strange hysteria that sometimes sneaks in to these raw feeding sites, you'll learn a lot. I found that making the switch to raw was easy and both of my dogs just love it. Good luck!

***edit - Raw means raw. You don't cook chicken when you're feeding raw......

Raw chicken can give your dog or yourself salmonella, a very harmful bacteria. It will not happen every time, but the one time that the chicken will have salmonella will be bad. Even raw diets prefer chicken to be cooked.
