You know if it is the Holy Spirit by asking is it Scriptural. If it goes against the Word of God then it is not the Holy Spirit.

I can't really explain how it feels, only you will know. Sometimes its a small voice, and sometimes you just feel the urging. I would say if you thought it was from God and that was your first instinct to follow it. Doubt will cause you to miss out, and in some cases be disobedient. When you start following, you just know that's what the holy spirit is leading you to do. As far as explaining it, we just do the absolute best we can.

The easiest way to explain it is this: It's that gut feeling you get when you want to do something and somewhere inside of you your debating it, battling over the thought. The part that's telling you to not do something you know might be detrimental to your spiritual walk with the Lord Jesus Christ is the Holy Spirit. In the same faction if you get a gut feeling that you oughta do something than it is the Holy Spirit.
A great story about listening to the Holy Spirit:
One day a Pastor was walking down a deserted street at night, there were high fences that lined the street dotted with private residences. It was at that time that the Holy Spirit spoke to the Preacher and told him to recite John 3:16 aloud while he walked. He thought to himself why? This is goofy there is no one here to hear this. So in obedience he did this. After he was done he got the same Gut Feeling that he should do it again. So he did this in obedience. After he was through he paused for a moment and heard a woman weaping on the otherside of the fence that lined that dark street. She had been in her garden arguing with the Lord God, doubting her faith, she was denying Christ. At that moment she said God if you are really here send me a sign let me know that you are here for me. At that very moment she heard the Preachers first recital of John 3:16. Being a stubborn Christian she said, "Okay but if you really love me, do that again."
Anyway, the Lord does speak to us through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the question is why are we not listening?
God Bless you,
On "Fire" for Christ

It will be an feeling that comes from within your heart that is difficult to describe. You may hear him, and you may have this urge to do something that makes no sense, but feel you need to. I say do it. To me, that is the Holy Spirit of God prompting you to do something.
Remember, God comes in all forms and shapes and can come calling anytime. Will you be there, or turn away?

Well, as a person we have 3 parts to us.
The body, the soul, and the spirit.
The Body...Now, you can see the body and of course that what we walk around in ....the shell that holds the soul and spirit.
The Soul...consists of the MIND, WILL, and EMOTIONS. If we are lead around by these(which unbelievers in Christ do) and (carnal Christians do and babes in Christ) then we are lead by the flesh.
The Spirit...this is the deepest part of a person....everyone has one. It is either dead to God (those who are unsaved by the blood of Christ) or Alive to God (those who have be redeemed by the blood sacrifice of Christ). When a person receives Jesus Christ into their life, the Holy Spirit indwells itself in the spirit of the person, which then makes the spiritman alive in Christ.
So you can look at it this way. A big circle(the body) and a smaller circle in that one (the soul) and then a tiny circle in that one (the spirit).
How do we hear from God....
When we read God's word and are redeemed(where our spirit is alive) it is the Word of God within us which the Holy spirit uses to guide us in our life. The Holy Spirit will NOT guide you into sin. This is why it is so important to read and knew God's word. It is the Word of God and His spirit which keeps us from sin.....Not us.
1JN 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
The ONE IN YOU is the Holy Spirit. The ONE IN THE WORLD is the devil or evil in the world.
HEB 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Remember, the soul is part of the flesh...our emotions, our will, our mind. We walk arounnd like this all the time. But God can seperate us from walking this way. By his Word.

Hello there sister.
This is a crucial kind of question that you are asking and i believe that as a believer the source of knowing the speaking of the Spirit and the direction of the Holy Spirit is to be one who has an abiding kind of life in the Lord. The more you are familiar with someone the more you know that person's feeling, preferences, tastes, choices, views, desires and will. As believers we have been regenerated by the Spirit of God and He witnesses with our spirits that we are Children of God. This is just the beginning, From then on we are called to a life of abiding in Chirst as branches abide in the vine. THis comes from developing a life and living with the Lord in a healthy way each day. Coming to the Word to be fed by the Lord as the bread of Life, Drinking of Him as the living water as you pray in the spirit. Of calling upon His name and enjoying His very Person. THe Lord, through this kind of intimate fellowship has a way to speak to us. he has a way to infuse us with all that He is and this affects who we are and what we do day by day in all our environments.
If i were to give you the letters ABCDE and told you to construct sentences with it you may come up with a few words. BAD> CAD>DAD>CADE>CAB and a few. But very limited right. Its the same with us and the Lord. IF we do not spend time in the Word.. giving the Lords' word a way to dwell in us richly, what do we expect the Lord to have as a resource to speak back to us. We need to feed on the Word, drink of the Word, labour and enjoy the Word, This gives the Spirit of God such a rich vocabulary to speak to us. In this way we can have a real sense within our spirits what the Lord is directing us to do in all matters, things, situations and persons.
We each have to know the Lord for ourselves. In the same way no one can eat for you or I.. no one can know the Lord for anyone. We each have to have a one on one day by day living in the Lord. Its how we grow how we mature in this christian life and become so use to the prompting and sense of the Holy Spirit indwelling us.
May we all live, walk, talk and have our entire being According to the Spirit of God.

When you feel "led" to do something, go ahead and do it! It doesn;t matter whether is comes from God or Satan as long as you do it... BECAUSE IT HAS TO BE DONE! King David needed to have a census made of his people so he reported it as coming from God to one Bible writer and a coming from Satan to another (Bible Ethics 101)
God and Satan work hand and hand... So the same Bible writers have a hard time to figure out who is causing a tragedy for Israel... is it God or Satan?
I Chronicles 21:1 (NIV) Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.
2 Samuel 24:1 (NIV) Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, "Go and take a census of Israel and Judah."
As you can see, it is enough to say that God did it! Who do you think that caused all the evil in the life of Job? God Almighty, of course!
Job 42:11 (KJV) Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over ALL THE EVIL that the LORD had brought upon him:
I know how you feel... Ignorance is the breeding ground of faith.... So I wish you the best in your quest of the truth and your loving personal relationship with God...

First the true way to explain something to people is to make sure we are living what we are trying to talk about, For instance, if I try to talk to you that it is wrong to drink, & then you see me in a bar drinking, Then my words & testimony is void, & the best way to know God is speaking to you is to know what you are talking about, because in my early days as a Christian,(I have been a Christian now for over 37 yrs.) When I try to witness, I was attack by certain questions that I could not answer back then, Now I can answer them, because in 37 yrs. God can teach you a lot, & anything God tells you to speak about will not go against God's word, There is not a subject now that I am afraid to talk about. Many times it is best to say nothing & just live it before the people, They will notice.

"The question that we might often have, which I believe
is not only understandable but also honorable, is “How
can I really know when I am being directed or led by the
Spirit?” You will know as you become more closely familiar
with the ministrations of the Holy Spirit. It is possible, however,
to be confused on occasion, even with the best of
intentions. I invite your careful consideration of the suggestions
President Faust made. If your life and your heart are
right, you can be more comfortable that you are on the
right track."

How could you not know it is from God when the Holy Spirit is on you? Could it be anything else. I think the only way people can understand is when they have the experience themselves.
