I have tried to search for days now, but in search the information seems to be jumbled or mixed. I would like to know when was the last suicide bomb in Israel? I don't mean to bring up bad memories, I am only interested to know if suicide bombings have decreased at all? Also any information on Kassem rockets being fired. For ex. in the last year?

Londoner I think you missed the last line which is: The only answer, the commander said, was for Abbas to renew ties with Hamas and give up on trying to split Gaza off from the West Bank. "This is what the Israelis want, and we Palestinians, as usual, will be the losers."
That sounds like Hamas is trying to make peace with Fatah to me, you don't feel the same way?

2007-10-17 06:27:26 · update #7

I guess this was missed also,For now, Hamas is trying to avoid provoking Israel into attacking the Gaza Strip. Instead, say Hamas officials, they are trying to restore order and calm after what one human rights activist described as the "organized, orchestrated chaos" that reigned during the power struggle between Fatah and Hamas. And to gain a breather, Hamas leaders say they are willing to observe a truce with Israel. But Hamas knows that the cease-fire will never succeed unless Islamic Jihad also signs on.

To me: this sounds like Hamas trying to make a truce with Israel! But of course if only Time Magazine and human rights groups are speaking to them. What will come of it? Israel and Hamas need to sit together maybe?

Hi Hopeless

The last suicide bomb was the one in January 2007, when three people were killed in an Eilat bakery, and the one prior to that killed eleven at a central Tel Aviv falafel stand in April 2006. There have been several other attempts in that time, but thankfully most suicide bomb plots are successfully thwarted.

This represents a significant reduction in the number of suicide bombs over the last couple of years, because by comparison in 2005 there were quite a few of them (hitting Tel Aviv, Be'ersheva, Hadera, and Netanya twice I believe), and in years before that they were very frequent indeed - see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/1197051.stm

So it is definitely a relatively safe time to visit Israel right now.

As for Qassam rockets, a few of them land each day in Sderot and surrounding areas, occasionally reaching Ashkelon but never any further. So as long as tourists avoid that area, they should be fine.

Regarding the article you mention, I can't say a whole lot except that from an Israeli's point of view, if there's one thing worse than Hamas, it's Islamic Jihad.

Hamas are totally unbending on their essential principles such as their refusal to recognise the right of the state of Israel to exist at all (and so I was amazed to see that some people on this forum apparently believe that Hamas is ready to enter negotiations for peace - how can they be if they can't accept our very existence?), but they do display some pragmatism at times and have abided by various ceasefires. Islamic Jihad by comparison has never once let up to my knowledge, and seem utterly committed to violent struggle regardless of how many die on either side or what may be in the best interests of the Palestinian people, because they are a transnational group rather than a purely Palestinian one.

If Hamas want to find a way of restraining them, I wish them luck!

As for Hamas wanting to resolve their conflict with Fatah, and offer a truce, I can believe that both of these may be genuine, because Hamas has often displayed pragmatism in order to advance its own interests . But I think it would be a mistake to interpret either of these as an indication of willingness to negotiate with Israel, as to date they have never expressed any intention whatsoever to accept the existence of Israel. It may be that these initiatives are instead aimed at getting Fatah to join forces with them, and in the meantime having some time to plan their next attack stage against Israel.

If Hamas do have any intention of talking peace with Israel, then they need to declare it, as until then it is understandable that Israel will view them as nothing but an implacable foe.

You know that I am a peace-seeker, and so I always listen carefully to any interviews that Hamas give to the media, in case there are any indications that they may be prepared to start modifying their values a bit. On a couple of occasions they have made statements which sound promising, but then they always retract them. So I'm afraid that at this stage, even an optimist like me sees no sign of hope of peace from them yet.

Suicide bombing have decreased from a couple a month 4 years ago to <1 a year now. There's hasn't been a suicide bombing in some time, though Kassam rockets continue to fall daily. This is mostly a function of improved Israeli intelligence, a crackdown at checkpoints and other more advanced anti-infiltration methods.
Hamas would never be interested in signing a truce with Israel. Hamas has stated quite clearly that it is religiously opposed to a truce, and the best they could do is an extended ceasefire. Their doctrine calls explicitly for the elimination of Israel and they're sticking to it. Israel has no incentive to agree to any such ceasefire, as all that does is give Hamas a chance to solidify its hold and build up its terrorist infrastructure. I also disagree with you about trying to avoid an Israeli invasion. Hamas is in fact trying to provoke an Israeli invasion, rational being that it gives them a good opportunity to kill as many Israelis as possible in urban engagements - a setting that favors terrorists over conventional soldiers. The Lebanese army for example simply shelled a refugee camp instead of entering it - and even then suffered more casualties than the terrorist. Israeli soldiers are better trained and better equipped and thus would probably not suffer as many casualties, but still enough that it would be potentially worthwhile for Hamas. Further, as Israel has no desire to re-occupy Gaza, the IDF would have to leave eventually, whereupon Hamas would claim that they fought them off.

5,000 Kassam rockets. The numbers have increased since Hamas took over the Gaza.

Suicide bombing has virtually stopped in Israel due to improved intelligence and the security barrier. Kassam rockets are only a problem around Sderot and some kibbutzim near the Gaza Strip. I would never call any area on earth 100% safe, but Israel is nothing like it was a few years ago. People live normal lives here and the "Arab-Israeli Conflict" rarely intrudes in day to day activites here.

Hope this helped, good luck!

suicide bombing has gone down remarkably, for a couple reasons.
1 is the security fence, or wall, whatever you want to call it, in the west bank. people complain about that wall, but it was built to stop suicide bombings and it is totally working.
2 is the withdrawal from gaza. the border with israel is much tighter now that israel has removed all troops and settlements from gaza.

as far as kassam and other rockets, they are being sent every single day from gaza into israel. not many are being sent from the west bank, because israeli troops are still in the west bank. but they are sent daily from gaza. most miss, but many do hit. this year several israelis have been killed and a synagogue was destroyed. the world goes nuts if israel touches a mosque, even when terrorists hide inside it (where's the respect for islam there?), but no one says a word when arabs destroy synagogues. that's why israel will always defend herself.

the completed conflict skinny began an prolonged time in the past. the huge combat is approximately whose land that's via fact in roman tmes the Jews lved there then they rebelled and have been given kicked out. The arabs moved in and settled. After WW2 the Jews have been sent returned to Palestine because it became into then because it became into below british mandate (which skill the united kingdom ought to style of govern it for them). the two aspects began combating and has executed ever via fact that. there have been many peace plans etc incliding the UN Partition Plan (UNPP)1947(think of) the Oslo accords and the "Roadmap for peace int he center East". None have worked becaus eof 3 significant subjects. a million) Palestinian Refugees who have been kicked off of their land while the UNPP began, and while they fled thier hmes in terro after the Deir Yassin assaults by utilising the Israeli military. 2) the prestige of Jerusalem. the city is the focal element for many faiths alongside with Jeudais and islam. it isobviosly a hotspot for combating via this. 3) Jewish settlements in Arab land additionally motives a lot aggavation. via threat to the inhabitants the Israelli military defends them and controlls themovement of arabs in Palestine heavily even even though it relatively is not any longer their land to control. i'm thinking you're touching on the wall it relatively is being outfitted to encompass the West economic enterprise and could effectively cut back off or impact around a hundred twenty five thousand refugees and cut back off water components and fertile agricultural land. The wall became into inspired by utilising the Berlin wall and if allowed to take place will mean that the west economic enterprise will effectively develop into the biggest penitentiary in the international. It certainly breaches international regulation however the UN does no longer something via fact u.s. of u.s. subsidized the Israelis interior the chilly conflict and presented them with weapons. Now as some have reported they recieve thousands and thousands of greenbacks well worth of help a 365 days. yet one greater reason "Western superpowers" do no longer intervene is via the fact the Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist sect, is in skill interior the west economic enterprise and none of them desire to bee seen as to be negotiating(sp) with terroists. Sorry for the essay yet i've got basically exceeded in slightly course artwork in this and understand a lot with regard to the undertaking.

To make the story short for you, Israeli leaders want to keep occupying land that was never part of Israel and there is no single country in the world is willing to recognize that land is part of Israel. So the the situation is Israel vs the world not only the poor Palestinians.
