If it is contained inside a bodily fluid, for example, in a drop of blood in the end of a syringe, it can survive for some time. It cannot, however, survive in the absence of the fluid (blood, semen, saliva, etc.)

outside the body within 24hrs it will die. The virus needs a host to survive. You have more of a chance catching Hepatitis B virus from a spill of blood then HIV. Hep B lives far longer outside the host.

HIV does not survive well outside of the body. It will remain infectious in body fluids such as blood, semen, and vaginal secretions until they dry up. As the fluids dry, the virus dies. So the exact length of time the virus survives depends on the amount of infected fluid and the time in takes the fluid to dry.
