Religion is very irrational and is the cause of much grief, suffering, and murder. Should it be outlawed altogether?

What you are describing is thoughtcrime.

If you read 1984 by George Orwell, you will agree that it is a bad idea.

Trying to stop people from believing something won't work.

Religion is based on belief. A state of mind that accepts the irrational, irrelevant, unbelievable, unscientific and just nonsense as fact though there is not one shred of evidence that suggests that any of it is true or accurate. You can outlaw religion. It was done in Russia and China. But you cannot outlaw the ability of people to think and tlak. So while the Law, in these countries said ther was no god or religious beliefs, the People inthose same countries kept the myths alive. When the lid came off - religion returned wholesale as if nothing had happened (Except damage to churches by the Red Guards.
You can outlaw physical items and activities but you cannot outlaw thinking. It is the difference in thinking that is causing all the trouble. Whether it is sex, religion or politics - personal beliefs are the basis for the problem and these cannot be legislated away no matter how much you and I agree that this is the best course of action to assure survival of the human race.

As much grief, suffering, and murder as religion causes, I stops 100 times more as religion is what keeps most of society from going nuts on each other. Maligned and misinterpreted religion is what causes most of the problems in this world. People will always do bad things and when it is done in the name of religion it makes the religion look bad not the individual or group who exploits the religion.

No.

It truly is the few that give majority a bad name.

Religion has never caused grief, suffering or murder. Those misguided or evil enough to distort things to their own ends cause the damage. Many atrocities have been caused by those with non-religious motivations.

It all depends on the kind of religion. Western atheists sick of the bigotry of christianity would like to equate all other religions with the same yardstick. I think you need to read about them first before you judge them all across the board. Read abouth buddhism. There are religions in this world that are not puritanical like the middle eastern faiths.

No they shouldn't be outlawed, but the division between church and state should be strengthened. The policy should be to each his own religion...but do not try to force your belief on another.
There should be a religious crime act where certain behaviors through religious belief could be upheld in a court of law as being a crime.

Sorry as much distaste as I have for religious nonsense I don't think restricting personal freedoms is a good answer to anything.

Even if for some it is the freedom to be an idiot.

No, while it may sound good in theory I think that this would have a detrimental effect on many people and of course may cause it/them to flourish.

It would be a good thing to fully define what separation of church and state means and remove the moral based laws or prohibitions.

Ask anyone from the former soviet union if making religion illegal is a good idea. People should be able to believe as they please. As the Wiccan people say "If it harms none, do what thou wilt." I am not Wiccan, either, but I am cool with them. Maybe if people were TOLERANT about what other people believe, then there would be no strife in the world. It's not religion, it's how people treat each other outside of religion

Not outlawed...but when some pasty, wide-eyed mental case comes up to us talking about Jesus & "the end times" we should pat them on the head and say "sure...sure...now where is your mommy?"

We don't build shrines to Mother Goose & Superman, we should treat all other works of fiction just the same.
