I have a friend going off-road biking for the first time this weekend, and she wanted to borrow it to save some money renting one. Would she be safe using my bike?

Actually I checked online, and it looks more like their off-road bikes and the tires are of a bit thicker tread. It is a basic bike, in the $300 range but nice. It has never been taken off-road before. Does anyone have any good maintenance tips we can check on before she takes it out?

It is NOT the top-of-the-line 8000 off-road bike, but I bought it back around 2002 and it says 8000 on it-sorry I do not have more info. I always thought it was off-road, and I guess my question here shows how little I know. Obviously road tires are much smaller and smoother. Any tips here still would be appreciated.

Okay, it is an 8000Sport from 2002. That should clarify totally now.

Trek 8000 is a full blown mountain bike, specifically make for off road trails. Not sure why you would think it's anything but...

The Trek 8000 is a fine mountain bike and was designed specifically for off-road usage. It could be outfitted with a variety of tires, though. Many moutain bikers put smooth tread tires on their bike when it is being ridden primarily on hard surface roads. Alternatively, your bike could be outfitted with knobbie tires for off-road usage. If your bike has knobbies she should be good to go. Put 35-40 pounds of pressure in the tires, adjust the seat, lube the chain, check the brakes and away she goes.

If your bike is outfitted with smooth tread - road tires it may be OK for your friend if she is going to be sticking to smooth, gentle trails. Otherwise, the tires are probably not ideal.

Either way, if the bike hasn't been ridden in a while, it may be a really good idea for her to take it to a local bike shop and have them check it out, pump the tires, adjust the seat, etc. If they think the tires are good for where she intends to ride she ought to be good to go.

Hope this helps.

That depends on what tires you have on the bike, if they are thin tires, I would not recommend using it off road, you need fat tires with treads to use it off road. Thin tires will go away before you hit that first turn.

Agree, which bike do you have? And what year? If knobby tires she should be fine. Basic off road riding should be safe. Be sure to le her borrow your helmet!

Do you possibly have a 7000 series bike? Those are more in the price range you describe, and are a hybrid style.
