On a local level, you save the district the cost of a salary if they had to hire someone to do this. That makes another resource available to the students.
On a larger level, maybe you inspired a student to pursue a career because they used a book you reshelved in the library to learn about a related topic. Or the money you saved was used to provide breakfasts to needy kids who didn't drop out of school and join gangs. Or your presence deterred a bully from attacking another student. Or you recognized a potentially dangerous situation, told the authorities, and kept the school from burning down. The list of possibilities here can be as large as you want.

I'm a teacher and have 32 kids in an elementary school. It really helps me when parents volunteer because I can work with kids in small groups. Why does it have to be national? If I volunteer at a soup kitchen it won't feed everyone in the country.

it makes a huge difference on the children you are helping, and on the overworked, underpaid teachers you're working with. that in turn shows the kids that it's important to help others with no expectation of reward/compensation. when kids see this, they will strive to imulate it in their own lives. when they grow up, they will think this is the norm, not the exception, and therefore make the nation a better place to live. when we are a better nation, we can impact the entire world. you may have to wait a few years (or even decades) but volunteer work always pays off!

You can't think like that or you will be self defeated before you even begin. Some of us will never be able to do something that will change the entire world for the better, but maybe you did that without knowing it. Maybe one of those school kids are doing better things because of something you said or did by example, maybe they will grow up to change the world and it will be partially because of your influence. We don't know all the ways we affect people.

u know what honestly, unless a school is super poor (im talking middle of the ghetto poor) then i agree in volunteering time to help further teach a child. but when its in a fairly decent public school then i dont believe in volunteering time, thats a teachers job. and in my school (dont know about anywhere else) they kept bringing in like 26 year olds for the teachers who didnt know anything and werent very good teachers. so thats tyhe damn schools fault.
