The thing here is that there are two different types of overweight people. The ones that have always been overweight and the ones that became overweight. It's pretty obvious that the ones who may have a medical problem are the ones who were always overweight. In women, the weight always seems to come on and stay on after they have children. This is because women tend to care less about their appearance after they have a child and care more about being a mother. It all comes down to this, EVERYONE has the time to do 35 minutes of cardio exercise at least 4 times a week. Everyone has 20 minutes to go to a store twice a week and 5 minutes daily to make a healthy sandwich for lunch. People dont because they are lazy and lack will power. If you dont have time to do these things, well you're so damn busy that you should be as skinny as a rail anyway.

Good question.
1. Food industry in the US is different than other countries.
Example: Go to Europe and most countries there do not use high fructose corn syrup. This is the number one sweetener used in the US. Cheap sugar. Introduced in the 70's as a cheap form of sugar, HFCS can be directly correlated to the bigger waistlines in the US. Even many whole grain breads have this super sugar. This can be found almost in everything.
Sugar in the blood triggers insulin.
Insulin triggers the body to store fat.
2. Preservatives - Chemicals like BHT preservative is banned in Europe but our kids eat it everyday in our cereal.... yes even Total cereal has this toxin.
Chemicals like these in the long run must make some changes to the body, I don't see how it can't.
3. The US has exceeded the world by having more obese people than starving people in the world
4. Europe and other countries still believe in local butchers.
Who knows where you get your meat these days? I know Walmart gets a bunch of food from China.

OK, I am overweight, not "fat" as you put it. I am a size 16, and only 5 ft. I have three children, and I know that is no excuse, because most people can loose their baby weight easily. I never say I have a medical reason for the excess weight, and I know and admit that I don't eat properly. I skip breakfast because i'm too busy rushing around getting my kids to eat their's and get them ready for school, I then pick a bit during the day in between housework, washing, ironing, cooking, etc, then Have dinner with the children. I also tend to pick a bit in the evenings, probably because I don't really have anything proper to eat all day untill dinner. I know this is all wron, and I have tried to put it right, but I just forget because I'm so busy.
I found my real Dad last year, and have just got in touch with my sisters that I had never met or known about untill then, and on meeting them I realised that they are all overweight like me. I never brought up the conversation, and neither did they, but it was just very clear to me that being overweight must run in the genes. It isn't because we were all overfed by our parents as we have never been brought up together, and our Dad has apparantly allways been big as well, untill recently .
So please mull over this one, and tell me if you think I'm just too lazy to get off my ****.........
I do walk to my kids school and back every day, it's a mile away up hill, and I have to push a buggy with a toddler in it, and I take them all swimming regularly, so I do exersize, and I am allways running up and down stairs with washing, and doing housework etc.
As for poor people in poor country's, they have no food, and have alot more problems to worry about other than there metabolism and weight, and they have a totally different way of life to us alltogether, so you really cannot compare..-

It is very easy to gain weight with todays calorie rich foods and abundance of choice. This is one of the main reasons for overeating, there is just so many dense foods to choose from.
Also, we sit down more, drive cars everywhere, play computer games, watch loads of tv, read yahoo answers on our computers! Need I go on?
Even if you go to the gym three or four times a week, you inevitably go home and sit down to watch tv and eat supper, all of these things go together to make the problem, it is not just overeating.
I have recently had an ankle injury preventing me from using the treadmill and have put on a stone, my ankle is not better so I cannot get the weight off yet, despite increasing my weighlifting and rowing/biking/arm bike. You need weight bearing exercise to drop fat, and I cannot do it, I AM NOT EATING ANY MORE THAN USUAL.
So just dont assume that people are greedy, it is far to complex an issue to make that generalisation. Lots of things have to change before a solution can be reached.
If you have travelled to countries where food is scarce, then tvs and computer games and cars are probably scarce also, need I say more?

Answer to problem of being fat is very complex. Heredity also affects it. Sense of well being and stress free life also makes you fat. I was in a west African country where civil war broke out and I saw due to stress people started loosing weight. But when you re fat and somebody asks you the reason you must give some excuses knowing very well that you do not know the exact answer to it.

Because people want to blame the rest of the world for their weight problems other than themselves. They don't want to give up eating a burger everyday and not exercising. It's really sad that America is the fattest country and people here say that it is in their genes or they are big boned. Come on people...stop playing video games and watching tv and get up and go for a walk.

Ahh! Fat-Bashing back on the agenda at Yahoo! Don't you just love it!
Didn't really read the question properly, but then that's not the point, so who cares.
Answer - the fat lumps of turds should be put to the mill to work the blubber off. There should be regulations on how wobbly you are allowed to be - break the scales - break the law - you're under arrest lard-****, time to face some hard labour at fat-camp!

I think the answer is at least two-fold. For one, people like the whole blaming things on health problems, because it makes them feel just a little bit special and fragile and deserving of sympathy. Secondly, sadly, lots of people would rather believe they are just unlucky and that its all outside of their control than just get a grip on the reality of it.

Genetics play a huge role in weight, metabolism, glands, etc...
Weight gain still has a lot to do with eating habits and exercise .
Combine the two and it can get out of control.

who would freely admit they're fat because of lack of exercise? or a deep love of deep fried food? it shouldn't be anyone's business to comment on how others look even though it has become a daily routine for most of us...i think also its hard for them to lose weight at all and they feel embarassed, i don't know anyone who's happily fat...sometimes depression sinks in so they think if they cn't lose 2 pounds easily they should just give up..
