I have a "following" that follows me around and gives thumbs down to everything I post and if you read my answers, they are very correct and informative. I am not rude or obnoxious. I am just here to help. Most of these are "top contributers" too who got thebadge because they all go around giving each other best answers.
I give thumbs down to totally incorrect answers, rude, obnoxious answers.

I will give thumbs down if the answer is not what is asked.. say someone ask.. should I buy a Chevy or a Ford and the answer is buy a Dodge. I may not like Chevy or Ford but that is not the question. I will give a thumbs down to the person because they did not answer the question. Other than that I will only give thumbs down if I know for sure the answer is wrong. I see sometimes some people give thumbs down and you can be sure they have no idea what the answer should be. I have given answers and received a thumbs down and no new answers so that to me means they don't know the answer and are not smart enough to give anything else but a thumbs down.
My favorite thumbs down was when the way I answered the question that by giving me a thumbs down would mean they agreed with me. And yes I received a thumbs down, believe it was two of them.

Well though I don't think this question belongs in the "dogs" section, I'll answer anyway.
Never once have I just indiscriminately handed out a thumbs down because I didn't like someone. It ALWAYS has to do with whether or not I like their answer.
However, especially if you get into religious stuff, there will be a LOT of thumbs down on so-called "good answers" because there's SO MUCH CONTROVERSY that what you believe is a good answer, thousands of others could hate. That's my best guess (and it's not always just in religious stuff either).
Though I'm sure there are some people who do it that way, silly things.

Whether I like the person or not does not influence whether I like their answer or not.
I typically give thumbs-down to answers that are flat-out factually wrong or are dangerous. If I strongly agree, I give a thumbs-up. If I don't agree, but it's an opinion question, then I don't give either. Also, if they are mostly right, but not completely, I don't rate the answer then either. (Most of the time I end up just not rating the answers.)
I have noticed it makes little difference. I have a few "standard" answers that I tend to give the same information a lot (such as dog food and information about papillons), it's funny to watch, I can give the exact same answer on 2 questions, on one question my answer will have all thumb-up, and on the other, it will have all thumbs-down.
I think many times, people don't think for themselves and just rate the answer however the people before them rated it.

I always thought people gave thumbs down to people only if they stated something the person didn't agree with.
I have never seen really good answers with 6+ "bad answers"... well, maybe once.
There are bound to be some very negative people here... not everyone will be constructive and have a healthy point of view.
I don't put a lot of stock in some of the questions, answers, and judgements.

the only time i have ever given thumbs down is is someone is intentionally rude or crass, if they honestly try to give a good answer...right or wrong i wont thumbs down. but i do notice alot of answers are getting unneeded and undeserved thumbs down, i guess you just have that kind of people all over, why not yahoo answers. everywhere you go you have to deal with the a@@holes of the world.

No, I have noticed thumbs up or down doesn't mean a lot anyway. Too many good answers are always given thumbs down.
Don't use this myself......no good reason to use thumbs up or down..

Sometimes if they're rude and insulting and personally attacking the person asking the question, or if the answer is so completely wrong, trivial or just not to the question at all. Some people seem to be trying to run up their score with non-answers like IDK. I mostly ignore those, but do wish if they don't have something to contribute, they wouldn't waste the bandwidth. But then, I suspect almost everyone has been guilty of that at some point.

Only when I just started out on YA. Nowadays I only give thumbs up for good answers. I post a lot of lame answers myself, if I may be honest, so why should I judge others.
