Can anybody spare some time to help me?

I had to have my 12 year old black retriver put down last week.
Im buying him a memorial stone in the next 2 days and looking for something to put on it along side with his name and photo.

Iv looked through the internet but all I get is sad 'lost' poems.

I would really like something short (bout 5 lines) that essentally would thank him for all the times we've shared, and the lives he has touched (as he was loved by far many more people than me) something that would make people smile when they read it.

He was an amazing dog, and I miss him so badly.

Thank you in advanced for your time.

I just had the words;
Loyal, Intelligent, Faithful, Gentle.
Our lives were so much richer for having him.

Also, if you have a memorial book at your vets, you might like to use the following poem;

If It Should Be;

If it sgould be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this, the last battle, cant be won,

You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship, stand the test,

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer so,
When the time comes, please let me go,

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
Only stay with me until the end,
and hold me firm, and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see,

Don't grieve that it should be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do,
we've been so close, we two these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears,

I know in time, you too will see,
It is a kindness you do for me,
Although my tail, its last has swayed,
From pain and suffering, i have been saved.

I found this poem shortly after i had to have my beloved German Pointer, Murphy, put to sleep. Although it made me cry so much at the time, i now find it really comforting, and can almost imagine my lovely Murphy saying it to me. I hope you find some comfort from it too.

I am so sorry for your loss, here is a longish poem, maybe you can pick a verse or tow out of it.

Listen.

Listen - can you hear your name?
He’s calling you - my friend
Although you’re slipping from me now -
This is not the end……………

A new life is about to start
Where you’ll be free from pain
Old-age - you’ll shrug off like a cloak
And you’ll be young again.

Listen - can you hear Him call?
His voice is soft and low
And as you leave this earth behind
Remember - as you go…….

I’ll not forget you my dear friend
Though we may be apart
Your memo’ry will remain with me -
Forever, in my heart.

Listen - He is calling still
Reaching out and so…..
Take His hand and slip away
It’s time for you to go.

So many happy times we’ve shared
These, sadness can’t erase
I feel that we’re together still
Tho’ we’ve gone separate ways.

I’m listening - but there’s no sound
You must have heard His voice
We both knew that the time had come
We knew there was no choice.

You’ve breathed your last - your eyes are closed
But this is not the end…….
For life at Rainbow Bridge awaits
Rest in Peace - dear friend.

I'm not gone...not really.
I haven't gone away...I've only gotten bigger.
My eyes, so bright, now shine among the stars.
My voice sings with the wind in winter, as I leap
And dance among the tree tops.
I stalk the blown leaves in autumn, and brush the
Flowers gently in the spring.
I come to you in dreaming, on feet grown dreamtime soft,
And lay my cheek against yours, and whisper:
"Peace be with you."
Someday we will play again together, you and I, among the stars.
'Til then, fear not to love, for your love gave my life meaning.
And I return that love to you...a hundredfold...a thousandfold...
Forever.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we three -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

This is a little more than 5 lines, but has some really nice lines in it, perhaps you could pick one or two out!

Really sorry to hear about your dog.

I Stood By Your Bed

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep
I whined to you softly As you brushed away a tear, "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea, You were thinking of the many times, Your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care. I want to re-assure you, That I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house, As you fumbled for your key. I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me"
You looked so very tired, And sank into a chair, I tried so hard to let you know, That I was standing there.
It's possible for me, To be so near you every day. To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, Then smiled, I think you knew… In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
An when the time is right for you, To cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to greet you, And we'll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, There is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out…
Then come home to be with me.

I'm so sorry for your loss...some people don't understand how devastating the death of a pet can be. Below is the Rainbow Bridge...it might now work for your stone, but a friend sent it to me after my doberman passed away and it did give me comfort.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

WHEN TOMORROW STARTS WITHOUT ME:
Author unknown:

When tomorrow starts without me,
And im not there to see;
The sun will rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
Remembering how i'd lay my head
In your lap that special way.
I know how much you love me,
As much as i love you,
And each time you think of me,
I know you'll miss me too.

But when tomorrow starts without me.
Please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name
And petted me with her hand.
She said my place was ready,
In heaven far above,
And that i'd have to leave behind
All those i dearly love.

But as i turned to heel away,
A tear fell from my eye,
For all my life i never thought
That i would have to die.
I had so much to live for,
So many sits and downs to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That i was leaving you

I thought about our lives together,
I know you must be sad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.

Remember how i'd nudge your hand,
And poke you with my nose?
The frisbee i would gladly chase,
The bad guy, i'd "bark and hold".

If i could relive yesterday,
just even for a while
I'd wag my tail and kiss you
just so i could see you smile.

But, then i fully realized,
this could never be;
For emptiness and memories
Will take the place of me.
And when i thought of treats and toys,
I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you and when i did,
My dog heart filled with sorrow.

But then i walked through heaven's gate,
And felt so much at home;
As god looked down at me,
From his beautiful golden throne.
He said "this is eternity,
And now we welcome you,
Today your life on earth is past
But here it starts anew.

I promise no tomorrow
But today will always last;
For you see, each day's the same day,
There's no longing for the past.
Now you have been so faithful,
So trusting, loyal and true;
Though there were times you did things,
You knew you shouldn't do.

But good dogs are forgiven,
And now at last your free;
So won't you sit here by my side,
And wait right here with me?"
So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think were far apart.
For every time you think of me,
I'm right there in your heart.

Hope you like it sweetheart thinking of you, i lost my girl on 21st of august after 15 years, so i know what your going through, take care.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

actually i will write the whole poem if you do not mind it is called i only wanted you

i only wanted you

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.

A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

The patter of your paws no more, no scratching at the door,
Your big soft eyes and dopey head have finally gone to rest.

You touched my life and that of others, as a friend you are the best.

Thank you for the momories, Pup.
