I would try the local library they usually have an archive/local history dept. x

After the library as suggested - your County Public Records Office.
Our local library has one complete area in the Reference rooms devoted just to the Town in which I live. You probably won't be able to take books out on loan so be prepared to spend time in the archives. Don't take a pen and paper - take a pencil - the reference librarian or archivists won't appreciate ink smudged on old tomes and maps

try Waterstones in Middlesbrough - they usually have books about the olden days and these tend to show the Newport Road area where Garden Street was.
