It depends on how much you are eating.

If you are eating too much or too little all the exercise in the world will yield minimal results.

90 percent of being successful at losing weight is proper nutrition.

If you are eating properly and wish to lose weight I would do 30 - 40 minutes 3 - 4 times a week of cardio (or your bike) and on the other days some other type of resistance training.

Hope this helps.

I would not worry about distance, more important is the time you put in. Do at least 20 minutes. If you want to lose weight you must burn more calories than you consume. So the amount of time you spend on the exercise bike will have to be long enough to do this. Since, you problably don't want to exercise forever, I suggest making small changes in your diet to eliminate some of your empty calories or calories. It takes work to lose weight, it can be done by forcing oneself to increase ones exercise time while not increasing calorie intake, or by keeping ones exercise level the same and improving ones diet. Or, a little of both. Any solution will require a change in your comfort level, in so far as what you can handle and maintain. Losing weight is similar to drug withdrawal, no matter how you do it. One gets addicted to the comfort a bigger body gives you.
