The rise of the British Empire could be said to have begun with the demise of the Spanish Armada! The British (and French) began to expand into the New World. After the French and Indian War (against the British), there were also the Napoleonic Wars which England won. The British also expanded into Africa, India, and Asia for raw materials and trade. And it should be recalled that the British even fought against the Russians in the Crimean War. The British likewise were here in the Middle East, and built the oil refinery here in Haifa which I can see from the Technion.

Good answer of math_at_technion.

It all started after the defeat of the Spaniards which owed to:
1) a good English tactic;
2) A new kind of English vessels with a new bottom;
3) a new kind of cannon the English just got thanks to the defection of a Bavarian gunsmith who helped them to build a long bronze made canon much more powerful and accurate that those the Spaniards had at that time.
As a result the English were able to shoot with remarkable accuracy at much greater range than the Spanish could.

Ultimately, the English found themselves with no rivals on the sea.
