I was a crime scene detective for 9 years in South Florida. I did my job because I honestly believe in making my community a better place.
Most people think cops are only out there giving tickets to speeders or people running red lights, or for the money (We seriously don't earn enough $$ for what we do) but we do ALOT more than this.
In my nine years, I prevented 1 house from burning down, while getting the family out and fighting the fire myself before the fire department was on scene. I pulled 2 kids from a theater that caught fire. I did CPR on people who had suffered heart attacks a whole bunch of times.
When women were beaten nearly to death by their husbands, I tracked them down and put them in jail so they wouldn't do it again.
When families had a loved one die, I responded and completed the death investigation, but also was there to console the bereaved family and help them understand what happened.
When children were involved in car accidents, screaming & crying, I pulled teddy bears from my car and made them happy again...then started writing the accident report.
When people reported an alligator in their yard, I responded and kept the resident safe while I got it out of their pool.
When accidents happened and the drunk driver was ejected onto the street and in pain, I kept other passing cars from driving right over him until the ambulance crew was able to care for him...all the while, bystanders were doing nothing.
When a woman went shopping and forgot her purse on top of her car, drove away and it fell off in the median of a 4-lane divided highway, scattering the contents, I got everything back, including the entire $1100 in cash that had begun to blow away all over the median.
When people had their cars and/or homes burglarized, I caught the suspects and got them restitution.
When an elderly lady had her purse snatched by a man 3 times her size and 1/4 her age, I ran after the guy and got her social security money ($700) back.
When a man, bent on committing suicide tried to kill himself by throwing himself under a train, I pushed him out of the way before getting hit.
When a man, barricaded himself in his house, threatened to shoot passersby and himself, I protected the onlookers from getting shot because they wanted to go see, "the action", and then I talked the guy into putting down his gun and coming out of the house unarmed.
When a teenage kid, whose house had burned down and came from a dysfunctional, abusive family was threatening suicide, demanded to speak to ONLY "Officer Gary" and no one else (while I was out sick), I still came in to work to chat with the boy and get him the help he needed.
When a woman who had been brutally raped, was crying hysterically and not knowing what to do, I explained things to her rationally and helped her get through the early phases of the investigation so she could help stop the suspect from doing it again.
Many times, I never heard thank you from many of these people, but I know in my heart that I made a difference in someone's life ...when they needed help, someone was there.
That's why cops do their jobs.

Fortune and glory, fortune and glory.
Seriously, I enjoy the job. It offers me a variety of different things everyday I go to work with a chance to go out there and do something good for the community. I started my career with a liberal view on life. As time has gone by I have become increasingly conservative. I still enjoy working with different people in various police situations. I don't like everyone I work with but I treat people like they treat me and give people the Police service warranted.
Why else would I work my birthday, my wife's birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas so people can sleep in peace at night? That is my 2007 schedule.
Edit: Oh my good. Take away the money and there would be no more police. Really sport do you think that all these great men and women out there would do this job if we couldn't pay our bills. Grow up. Of course if we could not pay our bills and feed our families we wouldn't do this job. Why would anyone do it if they couldn't make some sort of living out of it? Maybe just to meet brilliant thinkers like yourself.

I am one of the ones who will dish out speeding tickets to all in sundry. I gleefully book red light jumpers and mobile phone users. Its with a smile I arrest drink drivers. Its with a wink and a smile I'll dart you for not wearing your seat belt, have the fine and the points always at the ready! I gleefully detect and prosecute drivers with no insurance. I am the first contact with Police most people will have, and I am always happy when I am enforcing speed limits, Rules, Codes Laws and Regulations.
You might also see me without a smile.
When I call to your door to tell you that your son or daughter has been killed, or that your husband is in intensive care.
Or when I am the first at the scene of the accident trying to get you out of the car.
Or when I tell you that the person who has driven over your sister had no insurance.
Or when I visit you in hospital and tell you the driver that broke both your legs was drunk.
The list goes on and is very very real.

They do their JOB, yes JOB, they get paid for it just like the rest of us in work, but in their case if they get injured or lose their life they are heros, get plastered on the front page of the newspaper, top news story on tele, get loads in payouts. Yes, most of them are good at what they do and it can be dangerous at times but they know what the work entails, they could be injured or even killed but they know that when they sign on the dotted line, one of my family died when he was doing his job, he didn`t make the headlines and the family didn`t get a massive payout. Everyone doing a job has a hand in keeping the country on its feet not just the police, all people of working age know what they want to do, I wouldn`t want to be in the police force and they probably wouldn`t want to do my job, each to their own, so can we keep them out of the papers and off the news and let them get on with it!

If they are not doing their job, the public will be a mess with those idiotic gangsters gunning around and old people getting pushed around by teenagers as well as little kids getting raped brutally or even having your baby kidnapped and murdered brutally just to keep drugs in it's body and also having your hard earned cash stolen... So say yes to positivity and say no to negativity...

Hi Dracula,
when I joined the Police I wanted to serve my community and protect innocent people from those that would cause them harm.
After enduring 5 years of Racism, bureaucracy and politics, I gave up and turned my back on it all. I have no idea as to why they do their jobs, I am just grateful that they do.

They have a very difficult dangerous job that includes far more then law enforcement . Sometimes they mediate issues between people, often use psychology when dealing with others, help with broken down vehicles... protect and serve.
I have the utmost respect for the police, more often than not, no one wants to deal with them unless they're in trouble requiring someone with the authority to help them out.

Money!!! If you take away the money, there wouldn't be a single cop in this world. That should tell you everything you need to know about the people who become cops and the extent of their dedication to public service. Come to think of it, they are just exactly like politicians.

Because they care enough to want to make a difference in that way. I know some cops and they absolutely love what they do. Their passion for what they do is so immense that it's inspirational. Quite often they put many others before themselves and that is why they do what they do
