eBay is an online auction for people.
People will sell things and many other people will bid on the things. As with a real Auction the highest bid will win. You transfer money to the person you are buying the item from. Then as the other person receives the money they will send you the item.
For example you buy a video game somewhere and get bored of it soon. You want some money from this video game because it's nearly new and don't want it to go out in a garage sale 10 years later where someone will buy it for 10 cents.
The answer is eBay!
You put the item on auction at eBay under the video games section. There are many bids but InedibleSubstance has brought your video game for $25. Then InedibleSubstance will wire you $25 into your bank account. When you recieve it you are happy that you didn't get 10 cents for it and you wrap it and send it to InedibleSubstance. You are happy that you got $25 for a used game and InedibleSubstance is happy he got the game. It's in really good condition so InedibleSubstance notes that it was a really good trade. The more positive notes you get the better your reputation is on eBay.
