The total tax burden in the US is a bit more than half of what it is in the UK.

Income tax is capped at 35%. The typical wage earner pays a maximum marginal rate of 15% or 25% and a net rate of less than 20% of all income earned. Most states also levy income tax at between 3% and 8% net of all earnings.

Sales taxes (similar to VAT) vary from state to state and are generally less than 9%. A few states don't levy any.

There is no council tax but there are ad valorem property taxes. They vary from about 1/2% to as much as 5% of the value of the property annually. The states that don't levy income tax tend to have the highest property taxes.

No road tax but many states levy a personal property tax on vehicles. That's usually based upon the value of the car and declines as the car ages. Typically it's worse than buying a tax disc for the first couple of years and then drops to much less.

No TV tax. (Yipee!) No BBC (except on cable, and it's limited programming at that) :(

All countries levy import duties that vary based upon the goods in question.

There are a number of hidden excise taxes on various goods. These are not separately stated so it's hard to determine the total impact.

Petrol is about £1.50 per gallon at the pump. (And they gripe about high fuel costs here!)

Between national and local taxes and allocating corporation taxes to real people, taxes take about 1/3 of the country's income. Among major industrialized countries, we have the lowest overall tax burden. Some people will complain about it no matter what they have to pay.
