Atheism doesn't promote indifference. But it does make morality more subjective to the individual.
A religion with a codified set of rules provides a baseline that we would not have with just everyones opinions at odds with each other. And it solidifies morality, which in theory should keep it from changing over the years. But morality is not the primary function of religion anyway--just a built-in side-effect of it.
So no, religion is not necessary for morality, but used properly can be a valuable tool in defining it.

No we do not need religion any more in modern day society. Religion only attempts to hinder and prevent any progress if science, A majority of conflicts are due to religion and or religion is used to justify the cause of many conflicts.
Once we toss religion to the side things will get better.
Edit:
I think that the first poster saying Atheism is a rejection of moral oversight is just trying to give make Atheism look bad; when in FACT it is NOT

I think some people believe that they need religion to provide a moral compass, but not all.
Atheism doesn not promote indifference or immorality. In fact, I think not believing in God would make a person more likely to involved rather than apathetic, since any outcomes in their life would reflect solely upon them.

We really don't want anyone questioning our decisions. Very few people intentionally put a moral authority over them. It's like taking your parents with you when you go off to college.
If atheism is a rejection of moral oversight (and it is), then it promotes movable standards but not indifference.

Religion evolved from mankind misinterpreting and mistranslating the God Yahweh's scientific based instructions written for the survival of mankind on Earth. So even though it is a mistranslation it is still needed.

i think we do not. first people made it up to explain natural events. and it turned out to be tradition. and the latercomer leaders used it to govern people in the way they want. actually it still happens. consider vatican. mr. papa lives in a golden palace and they still expect donation from people (of course by the name of god). does it make any sense. if there were god why would it let all bad things happen. lastly i want to say a quote from nietzche: "God is dead"
