Blackout (fainting, loss of consciousness, passing out) can be described as a brief period in which a person temporarily loses consciousness or memory caused by a drop of blood flow and thus oxygen to the brain.

An alcohol induced blackout is where an individual suffers from amnesia after consuming large amounts of alcohol. The individual may seem coherent to surrounding others, but minutes after the conversation has ended; memory of this conversation will be lost forever. The individual will awake the next morning with no memory of any occurrences from the night before, this can be extremely upsetting and troublesome for the individual

How does a brain injury happen?
Your head can hit something
You can injure your brain without your head striking a solid object, but when the head does strike a solid object with enough force, the brain will be injured.

You can be in a car collision
The same uneven acceleration forces that cause the motor vehicle collision injuries to the neck, can injure the brain without impact. Automobile collisions apply a powerful and unnatural force to the body. This creates a swirling movement that disrupts the delicate brain structures, even without impact. One part of the brain moves faster than another, causing stretching of the nerve fibers. The brain is also a soft substance which strikes and scrapes against the hard skull and the tough meninges.

Blacking out is different from "passing out" which is drug induced unconsciousness, with risk of sedation that interferes with normal airway management and self protective reflexes, and high risk of death as a result.

A black-out occurs when there is hypotension or sudden drop in blood pressure and thus diminished Oxygen to the brain.or in hypoglycemic episodes where blood sugar levels drop too low; as sugar is the food for the brain.

Binge drinking in teens can lead to black-outs by affecting neurons in the hippocampus, which controls memory. In other words, alcohol ( a neurotoxin) shuts down the brain's ability to remember what the individual is doing while drunk despite the fact that the person continues to function in other ways.

Brain Blackout

Depends if the damage has extended to the brain, but typically your in sleep mode so to speak. I guess it's like when you put your computer in sleep mode. Your computer is still running and keeping processes running but you can not input any commands. Basically you will not remember anything that happened to you during the blackout. Sometimes there are after effects such as seizers and things but that all depends on how and where exactly the affected areas are on the brain.

Its your short term memory that just didn't hold the memory. The brain functions normal, the memory goes through your short term memory but is then lost. Causes; Drug use? Alcohol? Low on nutrition? Lack of sleep? Begging of a memory problem?(doubt the last one)

It goes into "sleep mode" and shuts down a lot of it's activity as you lose consciousness. Your sub-conscious is still there as long as you are alive .
