A cult is a religion with no political power. --Tom Wolfe

When I told the people of Northern Ireland that I was an atheist, a woman in the audience stood up and said, "Yes, but is it the God of the Catholics or the God of the Protestants in whom you don't believe?" --Quentin Crisp

I am surrounded by priests who repeat incessantly that their kingdom is not of this world, and yet they lay their hands on everything they can get. –Napolean Bonaparte

You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do. --Anne Lamott

Christians, needless to say, utterly detest one another; they slander each other constantly with the vilest forms of abuse, and cannot come to any sort of agreement in their teaching. Each sect brands its own, fills the head of its own with deceitful nonsense. --Celsus (178 AD)

The Church says the Earth is flat. But I know that it is round. For I have seen the shadow on the Moon. And I have more faith in a shadow than in the Church. --Magellan

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said 'Stop! don't do it!' 'Why shouldn't I?' he said. I said, 'Well, there's so much to live for!' He said, 'Like what?' I said, 'Well...are you religious or atheist?' He said, 'Religious.' I said, 'Me too! Are you Christian or Buddhist?' He said, 'Christian.' I said, 'Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?' He said, 'Protestant.' I said, 'Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?' He said, 'Baptist!' I said, 'Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist church of god or Baptist church of the lord?' He said, 'Baptist church of god!' I said, 'Me too! Are you original Baptist church of god, or are you reformed Baptist church of god?' He said, 'Reformed Baptist church of god!' I said, 'Me too! Are you reformed Baptist church of god, reformation of 1879, or reformed Baptist church of god, reformation of 1915?' He said, 'Reformed Baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!' I said, 'Die, heretic scum,' and pushed him off. --Emo Phillips

Jesus is pictured in the book of Revelation as the resurrected Savior, the Messiah who is preparing to return to earth a second time. "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore" (Revelation 1:18).

Jesus will take His rightful place as ruler of the earth, as the saving Messiah, when He returns. Where will you find yourself at that point?

A cult is defined as an organisation, sect or group claiming to be a religion - considered to be false, unorthodox, extremist, or problematic by society in general, or outside the currently accepted democratic culture of that country.
So how does society in general view Christianity?

christianity has tons of political power. watch the documentary "Jesus Camp". most of the conservative right are christians, and the two seem synonymous these days. its almost like christians are drawn to certain political parties because they support some of their beliefs (think anti-abortion laws), then the two get intertwined like The Church of the Republicans. I realize that the U.S. was founded on a constitution made up by mostly christians, and, in fact, this country was also meant to be run by bible-based laws, but the church does tend to think that one party is "holier" than the other somehow. thus, christians flock to one side and, BOOM. political power in all its glory. no pun intended...and of course it has a divine law. ten of them, actually. read early books like leviticus. they are spilling with divine laws from The Lord, all of which were meant to keep God's people prosperous and healthy, in a way befitting their culture and place of advancement in technology.
so, no, christianity is not a cult.

I think the fact that Christianity has no intrinsic political power anymore makes it even more of a true religion than it previously was.

You shouldn't spout off quotes of various individuals as infallible truths.

Yes it is a cult.God is omnipotent, omnipresent,almighty--He guides us in right direction--But people call Him(God) in different names and the procedures of worship God--are different--but the aim is the same with all religions. Thakur Sri Ramakrishna, the Guru of Swami Vivekananda,said--Many opinions--many ways.He (Thakur) cited an example --in a pond many men take water from the pond in different ways--so people can reach his destination in different ways.

Unfortunately it has got political power--when A "born-again" Christian like G W Bush can invade another country because "God told me too"--or block stem cell research because of religious superstitions--that is a complete misuse of political power!!

People throw the word cult around so often that it has lost any real meaning.

Sociologically speaking a group would have to be doing its members more harm then good to really be considered a cult.

Christianity has a great deal of political power! Have you not heard of the strength of the religious right? All presidential candidates are fighting for the votes of the Christians because they are one of the largest majorities in the US.

I don't agree with Wolfe's definition. I believe that it was Mark Twain who said: "If a lot of people believe in a myth, it's a religion. If some do, it's a cult. If one does, it's insanity." (Badly paraphrased!) As to the rest of your post, I agree.

Christianity DOES have political power. It may not be direct, but every single president so far has been christian (or catholic). Since it's a majority religion, it has vast influences on our laws and politics.
