The "medical part" of weed is, as has been stated, tetrahydrocannabinol, or delta 9 THC. The reason this has effects in our bodies is because we have several naturally occurring delta 9 THC's in our brains. Two of the more studied ones are AEA and 2-AG (arachidonoyl ethanolamide, and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol). So we have receptors for these compounds, and that's why "weed" does what it does.

Yea it's THC....there are several forms of synthetic THC available in oral or oromucosal form that you can get with a prescription, one of the brand names is Marinol. It's usually used to treat pain, but there is research about using it to treat pain and spasms from multiple sclerosis

I believe it helps disassociate the patient from the pain.
It's not addictive like so many Rx painkillers... but I also don't think it would be nearly as effective.
