flash like cameras is just a tool,

i suspect you dont really want to know how to use one, you want one to use on auto??

flash is simple, work at 100iso

devide the flash GN by the fstop and the answer is the meteres covered

eg - flash GN - 32 @ fstop 5.6 = 5.7meters coverage

eg gn32 @ f32 = 1meter

if you are using auto just get the canon flash with the biggest number - bigger number higher GN - more coverage

if you get the flash equation down then you can go onto off camera flash, ratios et cetera

Canon 580EX, or its predecessor the 560. The most powerful flash Canon makes.

Until you can master it, use it with your camera in Program mode and the flash in full digital TTL. Or Aperture Priority, and choose an f stop of 5.6 - 8 or so.

Also, you should have a bracket - Stroboframe or some other sturdy brand - to get your flah further away from the lens. If the 580 doesn't come with a diffuser, get one. i think it does though.

Shooting weddings well is no easy task, so you need all the flash power you can get your hands on.

If you're "looking for perfect," as you said, you'll probably want to upgrade lenses and that camera body pretty soon. The XTi isn't a pro camera by any stretch of the imagination.

So as soon as you can - if you're serious about this - move up. At least for now buy the best lenses you can afford. They'll work later when you move up to another body.

IMO, if you don't know how to set the flash for indoors, much less for fill-flash outdoors, you may not be ready to take on a wedding.

Buy the top of the line flash that Canon offers for your camera. Spend as much time as you can reading and studying the Owner's Manuals for the camera and flash so you can learn how to use them together. TTL (aka off-sensor flash metering) should take care of your indoor needs, as long as you stay within the limitations of the flash.

Buy the off-camera flash bracket and necessary cables offered by Canon.

Make sure you have a spare battery for your camera and spare batteries for your flash. An extra memory card wouldn't be a bad idea.

Good luck.
