The taking of the life for no real reason.

If i walk down the street and pick up a pipe and club you to death, that is murder.

If you are chasing after me with a knife and trap me, then I pick up a pipe and club you to death, that is a killing, for i was defending myself

Intentional taking of an innocent life. This is murder. A crime and a sin.

Legitimate self-defense is not an excuse to take life, but if it happens during the course of defending yourself or another from a dangerous aggressor, the act of killing would be exonerated.

There is also the case of taking someone's life by accident. If it is truly an accident, this too is not a crime or sin. Although, there could be civil ramifications, it is not criminal.

P.S. Addition

You have added: "well from what you guys have said, then its safe to say that war is considered murder since it is intentional killing."

Sadly, you are wrong. The Book of Romans instructs us to recognize and be subject to legitimate governments here on earth. God has placed government on earth for man's benefit. We are to be subject to the laws of the land and our countries. Some individuals not only have a right to take the life of others, but in the case of Law Enforcement and Military personnel, under certain circumstances, even have a duty to do so when it is to defend others...ie...citizens or their country.

I would say murder is when one takes the life of a human being for personal reasons, and particularly under illegal conditions. The taking of life performed by a soldier, police officer in the line of duty, etc. is business, not personal.

For the record, I'm not a Judeo-Christian, but I still see the difference in the words here as far as the Ten Commandments are concerned. But I gotta hand it to the Hindus: they addressed this dilemma right at the start of Bhagava-Gita.

To defend yourself from unwarranted oppression would most likely NOT be considered murder. In war, on the battlefield, it would be considered as killing. It's kind of like "kill or be killed." I think that the unwarranted taking of another life would be considered murder. A person needs to take responsibility for their own actions (or lack of.) If a person drives drunk, runs a stop light, hits and kills a person/s did he kill, or did he murder them? I'd say it was murder.

The bible is just a translation, so maybe the original word wasn't as specific as English, or maybe they just chose one. Either way, its just how they translated that word.

However I see murder as intending to kill someone, be it spur of the moment or planned. Killing encompases any situation where one human takes the life of another. This includes murder, but is not limited to it.

Dear Brother, MURDER is killing of person well planned in advance. HOMICIDE is unintentional killing of a person under influence of sudden anger, emotion or under unplanned circumstances. Thus though both are killings, the intention and circumstances help us decide as to whether it is a MURDER or HOMICIDE.

Murder would be the wanton killing of someone outside of self-defense. That would also include:

Suicide or assisted suicide

Abortion

Non-defensive wars of conquest for reasons other than self-defense or preservation of society

To kill intentionally and with premeditation.

But I guess soldiers are excluded from this because they are killing for the government. So its the government that murders, the soldier kills.

My definition is "to maliciously and intentionally take the life of another without provocation."

I also believe that someone who commits murder forfeits their own life.
