I agree with you, but Allen Mullally is really trying to keep Ford from bleeding to death.
While GM still has some money to spend on the promotion of Cadillac and revamping of that brand, you'll notice GM did decide to kill off Oldsmobile.
I would like to believe the Allen Mullally has got a plan to get Ford back in the black, and hopefully some green. This may mean that the Lincoln/Mercury brand may suffer a little more until he get's it cleaned up.
His new hire, that he stole from Toyota, James Farley I'm hoping will do something in marketing and fix the Ford Luxury brands. However, don't be surprised if one of the names disappears for a "new" start up.
I think only time will tell if the good ole days are truly "Gone Forever". I would have to believe that Mullally is making a great effort in fixing Ford. Things that I've read on line would seem to indicate he's taking Ford in the right direction (and hopefully in time). We may see a revival of Lincoln-Mercury yet.

except for the 1930 and 1940's Ford has always shared everything. The Mark IV and MarkV were the same as the Ford Thunderbird. The Mark-VI the same as the Mercury and Crown Vic. The Mark-VII the same as the Thunderbird they just added the air suspension but engine and drive train and platform was the same. The Mark-VIII was the most unique Lincoln in over forty years but no one wa buying them so all you people with your comments don't know what you are talking about they made something different then the other Fords and no one would buy them. The comment about the Town car is for people on prostate medicine well those people have money and they dictate what they should make it it happen to be the Towncar. All of you with your comments should have bought the Lincoln Mark-VIII and guess what, they would still be making them.

Lincolns have not always been badge engineered Fords. Lincoln introduced HID headlights in the 1996 Mk VIII long before Mercedes Benz and all the others came running along later. That's just one of the Lincoln innovations. All wheel disc brakes, rain sensing wipers, squeeze activated horns in the steering wheels, the list goes on and on.
The problem is with the Detroit mentality. These are people who thought SUVs would outsell passenger cars forever. Even if gas prices went to a penny a gallon, no fad or trend lasts forever. But the are the guys who were offering opera lights and landau roofs in the mid 80s!
Currently Ford thinks of Lincoln as their geriatric brand. No racing ala Cadillac, no real innovation and nothing to attract buyers who aren't on prostate medication. One hopes they will get their act together before the brand goes the way of Oldsmobile, also relegated to the AARP set.

Sadly, they are. But you have to realize that they are great vehicles. Lincoln is still far different from For and Mercury in many ways. Take the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan for example. They both has the same interior, engine, body style, some similar styling ques, and more. Then there's the Lincon MKZ, which uses a totally different, more sportier engine, different and classier interior, the body style is just a tad altered, and the styling is nothing like the Fusion or Milan.

Another example is the Ford Edge and the Lincoln MKX. Even though they share the same platform and engine, they both have different exterior and way different interior styling. The MKX also features more things that the Edge doesn't feature.

The Lincoln Navigator is like the Ford Expedition, but again, has the same engine and chassis. But their interior and exterior qualities, along with different standard features and other features one doesn't makes them different than one another.

The Lincoln Town Car and Ford Crown Victoria are actually alot different. Besides that platform and engine, the Town Car is 1,000 times classier, with a totally 100% different interior with way more features and comfort. The exterior is different too, being more classier and more modern looking.

The Mark Lt and F-150 are actually similar and different. They both have the same engine, platform, interior style, exterior style, ect. Although, the Mark Lt has more chrome and some-what shinier than the F-150. It also has a more refined leather and material qualities in the interior. Also features more standard features than the F-150.

Kinda like Lexus is a re badged Toyota and Acura is a re badged Honda and Cadillac a re badged Buick/Chev/GMC/Pontiac. Maybe it's time to praise Lincoln for big positives such as the huge strides in quality & product. Currently they have class leading products with the X, Z, Navigator, and even the Town car(yes Town Car-there is no substitute).

My daughter is a freshman in college. The way that Ford manages their company, you could get the impression that Ford was a class project run by freshman in management 101. Todays project is to see if we can rename everything with famous names of our cars from years past and call it nostaligic. What a joke. and they have lasted this tlong!!??
