Are the cats strictly indoor cats, if not there could be any number of poisons they could have gotten into, (I had a cat that was poisoned by my neighbor with anti freeze 14 years ago). Perhaps poisonous plants in the house?
Best advice I can offer until you get them to the vet wash everything with bleach water keep the sick kitten isolated from the other cat, if it's a virus which it's likely to be seeing how one cat has passed away, and another is sick.
Keep a watchful eye on both until you can get both of them to the vet.

The vet can do a necropsy on the cat to determine cause of death. Someone before you may have put down some sort of poison that you haven't seen but the cat has contacted. Since cats groom themselves it's quite possible something got on its paw and it licked it off. This is horrible - I'm really sorry :(

lead poisoning, most old houses use lead based paints for radiators, also mold can cause illness in humans and pets, maybe try getting an inspector to inspect your house for these things. Sorry I can't help too much as I never had this problem, but if I ever lost my cat, I wouldn't know what I'd do.
Hope I helped somehow,

my friend same thing happen once. when my friend took her last cats to the vet, thhe problem was the food. there wasn't anything bad in it, but there was a sudden change. so if you have changed anything lately in ghere diet, you should stop stop. even if you have just opened a new food package, you might want to take that away for now. hope your cats get better!

I don't know if it's true or not but I've heard that mothballs are poisonous to cats.
Good luck!
