She has threatened them & us. Now our two cats are sick and exhibiting signs of poisoning. They are being watched, currently doing better. We looked around to see what could have made them ill, and found that she's poured a white powdered substance all along our shared fence in her yard. We called the police who questioned her and she said it was an insect repellent made of crushed sea shells. Just being near it caused burning in my nose and lips. but, Unless we can have substance tested to prove it's poison, there is apparently nothing the police can do. We're worried of course about our animals, and also about our health including that of our young nephew who spends a lot of time here. Has anyone dealt with this kind of thing? What can we do, how can we find out if she has in fact laid out poison? Are there any agencies that can help us? (Please, if you have hateful, rude or useless things to share just move on, this is really serious). Thank you for your help.

thanks, the cats are indoors and will stay in til this is resolved. we have cleaned them and the symptoms have subsided, but we'll take them to the vet tomorrow... thanks for the helpful suggestions and support, this is madness! we did take a sample and a photo, just not sure what to do with them?

the symptoms were salivating a lot and irritated eyes. they seem to be doing much better now, they drank water and we cleaned their faces and paws and they've both eaten, so those are good signs.

sound almost like boric acid. this is used for bugs but is toxic to ppl & animals! what are the cats symtoms?? the only thing to do is take them to the vet. to be tested. a poisoned animals may seem fine & by the time it is ill enough to consern you, it's to late. by this time the poisen has already attacted the main organs. the vet. can try to find out what kind it is , then go from there. takes some gloves & a baggie & scoop some up. this way if it is what is making them sick you have proof she did it. since the police was involed, she may try & get ride of it. sorry you are going though this & i hope i helped.

I think if you get a sample of the powder and take it to your county agricultural department that they will test it for you and tell you what it is. Or try the health department. If those two agencies can't help you, they should be able to direct you to who can.

Did you contact your local animal control? Also, have you taken your cats to the veterinarian? Your vet would be able to tell you if they've been poisoned and maybe even tell you what the poison is.

We had a cat die from being poisoned. It's such a slow, torturous death. I hope you can find out the answers you need and that your cats recover soon. My best to you.

The best thing to do is to talk to the neighbors some more and find out as much as you can on this " neighbor ". Try to find out if she is a animal hater meaning she doesn't like any animals. After that if you have some reasons to think it was this lady call the SPCA if you have one near you. Call them and tell them about your problem and see if they can go and check the house. Usually if they think something if fishy they will get a warrant and check the house for any clues. But then again theres a chance your cat wondered off maybe hopped in a car its happened to my cats before. Hope this helped.

It is too bad that you have such a psycho for a neighbor!

Your first course of action should be to:
Keep your cats indoors!!!!!

They should not be exposed to whatever the substance is for their own safety and health!

They will cry and want to get out of the house, but you must not let them!!

KEEP THEM INSIDE!!!

That said, you have certainly done the right thing by calling the police. Your neighbor now knows that you are aware of the fact that she may be trying to harm your pets and she may be less inclined to try to do it again. However, it is true that the police can only do so much to help and can't do any more without evidence.

I suggest you contact your local Humane Society or ASPCA branch and explain your problem to them. They may be able to offer some suggestions or help -- perhaps even analyze a sample of the suspect soil for you.

You may also want to check with your vet and detail your concerns. He/she may also be able to refer you to someone who can run a chemical analysis.

Good luck and keep us informed of your progress.

The white powder could be either sevin dust or boric acid, I would think more so sevin dust because it's commonly used to keep insects from the lawns and gardens.

When my cat was poisoned we had called the vet and were told to give her peroxide to make her vomit it up this actually made her foam at the mouth the vet said it was the infection that was foaming, then we rushed her to meet the vet (at midnight) only to have her die in the vets office that night. They preformed testing after she passed away to determine what exactly killed her, other than taking them to the vet I doubt there is a way to determine if they were poisoned.

Ok first take your pets and the substance to the vet. Maybe they can identify it. It's very serious because if it's rat poison they can die ! Vitamin K is the antidote..

Anyway, Keep your cats inside for a while. They won't like it but you need to take care of them:( poor babies Who could hate cats!!!!! Litter box train them for a while. It's actually better for cats to be indoors. They live longer. Just keep them occupied with scratch posts, toys and cat nip and some love/

Good Luck:(

Scoop up some of the substance and take it and your cats to the vet as soon as possible. If it turns out it is poison call the police again and have her charged for endangering your nephew. In the meantime I would keep the cats inside.

How terrible to live in fear of this. I have crazy neighbor who hates me and my kids, but I don't worry about this from her. I can't believe the police can't help you. Make sure you make a report, for documentation. Call the FBI. What the hell? The threat to everyone should be enough for action. Get some of the powder now, enough to have it tested, in case she decides to wash it down with the hose. Then I'd take it to to the vet with the cats.

Good luck!

Another example of why cats belong INDOORS not out. You're lucky your cats seem to be surviving this. Please take this as a chance to do the right thing and keep them inside where they're safe and sound. Odds are next time you won't be so lucky.
