I have Frontline Plus for Dogs right now and I was just wondering which was better. Also, if anyone can answer a couple questions with the Frontline Plus, i'd love to hear them. Does Frontline Plus have an expiration date? I've looked all over the box and couldn't find one. I haven't used it in a while, so I wanted to make sure. Also, how long of a time frame should I wait in between doses? Thanks so much! ♥

I saw the that K9 Advantix is good for Masquitos, thats why i'm worried that the Frontline Plus doesn't have a masquito repelant in it. Isn't that how does get worms???

I just wanted to let everyone know that I DO give my dog a heartworm pill every month. I didn't want anyone to get mis-informed. My dog is actually very very spoiled. He's a family member to us, not a dog. I just thought that masquitos could cause belly worms. My friend told me if a dog eats a masquito is the only way he can get belly worms. I thought she was right because she has 5 dogs. I was told that you know a dog has worms if he scooches his butt on the carpet or if his belly is bloated. How exacly do you know? Anyways, thanks everyone. His myspace page is...

if anyone wants to see him, lol.

I use advantix (it is dangerous if you have cats the permethrin in it is toxic to cats)

You use it once a month generally. It does not show any expire date.

Please note fleas can develop a tolerance of any chemical many vets suggest rotating product active ingredients to avoid this.
.
Regardless of which you use do not bath for a few days before or after applying, the oil in the coat is needed to help spread the product over the dog.

Mosquitoes do carry heart-worms but no topical should be depended on as a heart-worm preventative. I do not nor have I ever had problems with fleas or ticks where I live but the mosquitoes are horrendous this year because of over a month of daily rain. Advantix does work for this however the effective use of it is way less than a month. I have discussed this with several vets who have all agreed that the permethrin in advantix and also available in horse fly wipe and products labeled for cattle all over shoot the effective day. My own experience has been that it is effective for about a week for mosquitoes. I always use a seperate product for heart worm prevention.

You can use the human spray for mosquitoes if they are really bad, I would suggest one labeled for children and wiping them off with baby wipes or a damp towel before a new spray. The worst time for mosquitoes are the 'tween' times, before sunset, just at dawn. They are not that bad generally once it is full blown night time. Here they are the worst from about 1 to 1.5 hours before sunset when the yard is shaded and it begins to cool off outside. Some also swear by avon skin so soft lotion diluted with water in a sprayer. There are also herbs that can be crushed and rubbed on the coat that will repel insects like penny royal

Your friend is talking about tape worms, to get them a dog eats a flea that contains the eggs. Either product will reduce flea populations. Yes dragging a butt can be a sign of worms but tape worms are visible in the stool somewhat like small grains of white rice. Fresh you can see them move, after drying they look like uncooked rice. They are short, flat and generally white to slightly off white. They are the easiest worm to spot because the segments are so large. What you see in the stool are the end segment. The worms head is attached inside the dog and requires a wormer to kill it. It takes about 3 weeks from the time a dog eats an infected flea for the sections to start to pass in stool. Most wormers will not kill tapes but there are a few that will. 'tape worm tabs' are not prescription, 'safe guard' is also non prescription and is the same thing (active ingredient) as panacur which is commonly used by vets as a general wormer. Your vet can also sell a product for tape worms, usually without even seeing the dog because they are so easy for owners to spot and dogs to get.

Here is a search on tape worms so you can see what they look like.

Hookworms and roundworms are usually responsible for bloated tummys. There are a large number of wormers that will get rid of these two worms.

Impacted anal glands can also cause scooting.

THERE AINT NO BUGS ON ME.....LOL! Frontline Plus did absolutely NOTHING for my dogs, I think the K9 Advantix is much better. The Frontline only kills the fleas AFTER they bite (kind of pointless there huh?) Where as the k9 Advantix REPELS fleas & ticks and keeps them from getting on your dog in the 1st place.... Gee....Im starting to sound like a commercial...., LOL

We have ALWAYS had great success with Frontline & now Frontline Plus. A friend of ours used Advantix & she found 2 ticks on her dogs. She found flea dirt but no fleas, soooo....
As for usage, we apply the first dose in May, not giving the dogs a bath for a week prior or for a week after application. Then we dose again 3 months later which then carries us through October. There are usually doses left over & we use those the next May & so on.... We do not apply it all year long. Only May & August.
One of our Border Collies had a tick that we found, but it was dead.

I live in Alaska where we say that mosquitoes are the state bird. As for worms, we worm with Drontal. We also give them Heart Guard.

I didn`t like k9 advantix. It didn`t kill the fleas on my dog. He scratched all month.

The frontline plus did a great job of killing and keeping off the fleas and have no problem with ticks as we are in the woods alot.

Frontline plus has no expiration date on the box. You can call the mfg. They told me it was good past 2009.

It says on the box to give your dog 1 dose every 30 days.

I have tried both. I like frontline plus better because Advantix is a little bit too oily for my dogs coat. After I put it on them, two of the dogs coats feel oily on that spot. Their coats don't feel like that with frontline plus. Regarding the expiration date, I think you may want to write to frontline plus to ask about it (sorry!). Although you may want to use Advantix to repel mosquito, you still need to give your dog monthly heartworm medication (I use Interceptor). For both frontline plus and Advantix, you should give it to them on the same day each month, like 15th of each month. I hope this helps.

Personal preference here, I've worked with both medications and I've been much happier with frontline plus

Treatments should be given once a month unless otherwise specified by a veterinarian.

I also prefer vet prescribed meds to the store bought or petmeds version of frontline due to outsourcing.

(Online companies and many petstores get their supplies from warehouses who get their supplies from outside the US for cheaper than the Vets who get their supplies from the makers of the products which can be more costly.)

Its how its cheaper for us to buy from the stores, but That's how we got tainted food and fake toothpaste.

*** Edit ***

I use Heartguard to prevent transmissions of musquitoe born ailiments (like heartworms).

also... like someone else said... Advantix is toxic not only to other animals but can be harmful to children as well.

many people complain that it doesn't seem to be as effective for the full 30 days.

There's not much difference between the 2 in my opinion. But Advantix is cheaper.
Wait 30 days between doses. Also, apply it at night before bed so there's less chance the dog rolls on the carpet or ground and it comes off before it dries. And don't allow the dog to get wet for 2 full days after application. This goes for either product to get the best results.

i been usin frontline plus all my life, and it works pretty good. its waterbase too, so if ur dog gets wet it wont remove the chemical... with the advantix, i heard that it was pretty good it works on mosquitos... maybe in the summer time try that, but if frontline is working fine, i wouldnt bother to change it... OH, u should always reapply once a month, and make sure to bathe ur dog before u apply it.

if you have cats, do NOT use K9 advantix. Its highly toxic to cats, and they can even be poisoned from the residue on your dog.

If you do not have cats, I would opt for the advantix, since it does offer the extra protection from mosquitos. Dogs get heartworm from mosquito bites.. your dog should also be on a heartworm preventative tho.

advantix is just a cheaper brand of front line
personally they are both good, but advantix does the trick for a better price.

doses should be written on the back of the box, as it all depends on the weight and size of your dog how much you give them

expiry dates ? im not too sure. i wouldnt worry... as long as the tube is sealed and hasnt been opened at all, keep it for as long as u like.
