From a former military guy.

Get Kiwi paste wax and apply a liberal amout on to the shoe.
Take a flame and ingnite the wax.
What this does it melts the wax into the leather, sealing the small cracks and holes in the leather.
After sitting for a few minutes, take a good buffing brush and buff lightly to the best shine.
Repeat this three ( 3 ) times.
Now the shoe surface is ready for the (wet) cotton ball application.
With a dampened cotton ball (water) and a small dab of shoe polish start in small circles the size of a nickel with a rotating
motion and work the wax into the shoe till it starts to shine itself.
With a tea shirt (old or new) make a workable long sheet for buffing. Buff shoes lightly.
Repeat this at least 4 times and you should have a patten-leather shine.
Don't be afraid to use liberal amounts of wax in each step.

And Whalll la !

Ready for inspection.

Cheers,

Wood

To shine boots:

1. Initially, remove the dirts or mud from the shoes;
2. Apply the shoe polish equally on the boots;
3. Wipe intermittently with a clean cotton cloth the shoe polish in a circling manner so that the shine will shoe; and
4. Add a little water while doing the wiping of the boots to add a glittering glow.

I spit shined boots for too many years but then found a product called "Leather Luster". You literally paint it onto the boot in a VERY thin coating, put the boots in the oven (DON'T TURN THE OVEN ON) to dry overnight (this prevents dust from settling on them while they dry). Test to make sure they're entirely dry before putting them on in the morning. My boots never cracked or split and the shine was deep as a well. One coating lasted me for years, honestly. However, I wasn't running around in the mud and grime by that point in my career. Still, it'll look like you spent days getting that deep black shine.

Spit and a lot of rubbing, always in the same direction.

However, boot shine is fading out in all branches. The new boots aren't to be shined, and uniforms are not to be startched or ironed.

The marine corp does not have boots to shine anymore.
