It is very likely that Hillery will be elected in 2008. It is also very likely that a power hungry socialist will like her will not give up power easily.
So I would say the chance of a military dictatorship is about the same as the chance of a Hillery Clinton presidency.
Just let her get control for a second and she will ensure that she never loses it...

It's quite unlikely, given how the Constitution is written with checks and balances. It would be a failed coup attempt, at best, either now or in 2025 like some joker posted.
The military is sworn to uphold the Constitution and even if some general was wacky enough to try, his troops wouldn't have to obey his orders since they would not be lawful.
You also have to throw in the 'Good ol' Boy' factor. There's too many gun toting, deer hunting, beer belly carrying Good ol' Boys with a gunrack of weapons to let anyone try a military takeover. No insult intended to my fellow rednecks. Seriously, there are millions of loyal gun owners that would have their say in that type of thing first.

The military industrial complex already controls over 50% of all federal expenditures, so I would argue that there is no need for the military to overthrow the government since the government already supports their interests.

The military cannot takover the US government because the people supports the principle that civilian authority is supreme over the military as provided for in the Constitution.

There is no such thing as a military dictatorship first of all, and second of all, the US government controls the military.

higher than they were in 1999...police are being taught to use anti-riot tactics/gear against peaceful protestors...marines have already made patrols in American suburbia stopping cars just like we're some country to be occupied...internment camps are being constructed in Alaska as we speak...isolated cases of military personell and officers using torcher on detainees some of whom could be American citizens and arrested without warrent or due process...and those soldiers/marines actually think THAT'S what we want...ask yourself if a team of soldiers was ordered to fire on non-violent protesting Americans would they disobey that command?
