Depending on what you believe, the answer would be very different. If you believe that the Earth was some result of the big bang you are looking at the poles being quite a bit warmer than they are now. The polar caps were just forming.
On the other hand some people believe that 10 ma (million years ago) the earth didn't exist yet. Most Christians believe that God created Earth approximately 6,000 years ago. Which would mean that there were no poles or even an Earth.

Globally temps were approx 9°C warmer than they are now. The Arctic didn't exist and it would be a further 6 to 7 million years before it came into being. Antarctica was remarkably similar to it's present day situation.

It may seem odd that in a world where temps were quite a bit warmer than they are now that Antarctica could be so similar to today. There were some important geological differences affecting the movement of ocean currents, the mechanism by which much heat is distributed around the planet.

Europe and America were almost attached to each other - Greenland was attached to Canada and the land mass stretched eastwards, Europe extended further west than it currently is and the two almost met at a point roughly where Iceland is today, the gap between the two continents being about 200 miles.

Additionally, North and South America had only recently joined together and in doing so had radically altered the flow of ocean currents and caused one of the biggest climatic upheavals in our planet's history.
