The top graduates of Basic Training and AIT are often promoted for being the top graduate.

Being top graduate is a combination of test scores, and somewhat intangible instructor evaluations. It's not enough to be "smart" and proficient with the weapons of the Infantry (and there are a LOT of them), the top graduate will be the one who displays leadership abilities. Leadership isn't just a matter of knowing what to do and using good judgment, it's also a matter of whether or not anyone will follow you.

And that makes perfect sense, when you think about it. Higher ranks carry some leadership authority. If you display leadership ability, you get the rank. You will wait longer for rank if you plan to get the rank and then "grow into it."

You absolutely can be promoted in AIT.

Infantry AIT is 13 weeks. If you come in as an E-1, you will be eligible for E-2 at the end of AIT. If you are really good, you can get an accelerated promotion.

Additionally, there are a number of awards, like 'honor grad', that will get you promoted in Basic/AIT.

Work hard and be tough. You will make it!

E1 to E2 is common. Some E2 to E3. can't go over E3 w/o putting in the time. Don't worry about it, just work hard and good things will come.
