I don't think this is such a big issue that it has to either be rude or polite. I don't believe that other people will frown upon them if they do it in public. As long as they don't eat or drink noisily, I woldn't think it matters.
Just look at the surrouding etiquette, I guess. I mean, if they were in a formal dinner somewhere at an official event, it probably NOT a good idea to drink it form the spoon. But - at home or at the mall, NO BIG DEAL.

The spoon is to be removed from the cup after stirring and placed on the saucer. It is then left there. So the answer is "no, it is not proper etiquette to drink milk or hot chocolate from the spoon". I was raised in the South in the 60s and 70s and we were made to take etiquette classes in public school. My children were raised in the Midwest and no classes of this type were ever offered. Shame.
Here is a website which outlines table etiquette.

I hope I've helped.

It is not good manners to drink any beverage from a spoon. You're going to have a hard time getting that across to them as long as he is doing it, though. I would encourage good etiquette even when at home alone because it's harder to forget and slip up if you always try to behave properly.
If it is going to turn into a big huge war, I would allow it at home just to keep the peace. But explain to them that it's kind of like leaning on the table- you don't do it when company is over, or you ARE company.

It is bad manners to use a spoon to drink a beverage. And while you can eat however you like in the privacy of your own home, many people become so accustomed to them, they unthinkingly do it the same way in public.
Let your husband do it, but encourage your girls to use corrrect etiquette.
On a first date in a restaurant, the man I was with actually licked his knife without batting an eyelid! I got to know his family and believe it or not, they all did it.

Hi, ok so you and your husband have different opionions on this "spoon" matter. In public it is very rude to drink from a spoon, and make loud noises while drinking. However; somethimes are are little exceptions. If you are in your home with close frineds or family I beleive that you can use a spoon to drink your hot coco, coffee, tea, etc. Now if you think that this is wrong in all cases than you should stand by your beleifs. So I beleive the answer to your question depends on your prespective on the matter. I never knew that little matters like this could have big impacts.

If it were acceptable to drink from a spoon one would not have cups or glasses from which to drink. The exception might be if the girls are drinking from the spoon when a liquid is too hot. Smaller amounts will cool more quickly, and I can understand a bit of impatience in a child.
Exceptions to good manners outside of allowances for age and physical ability in small things or in certain settings provides a basis for poor manners in settings where it will matter. My children have no experience with a formal dinner, but because they have been taught proper manners in casual settings they are equipped with the ability to display excellent manners even in unfamiliar settings.

I love drinking hot chocoalte from a spoon. I don't see the problem with it, especially if you are a kid. If you are in a formal setting than no, but usually when you are drinking hot chocolate it's in a fun setting. I think making stupid rules like that is a waste of time and kills the fun of things. Spend your time focusing on more important issues.

I'm on your side! Would your husband drink from a spoon in a restaurant? I would hope not, and why should your house be any different?

I don't see the harm in using a spoon, as long as they don't make a mess.
