You seem to be missing the main reason WHY they have to drive on the wrong side of the road and through neighborhoods. Because the suspect they're pursuing is doing it first, perhaps?
Funny how everyone seems to forget about the person being chased, isn't it?
Unfortunately, we as Police Officers are damned if we do and damned if we don't. If we do and the suspect hits someone else we get blamed for it. If we don't and find out that the suspect committed another crime later, we get blamed for it.
Most if not all Police departments have a comprehensive policy of when an Officer can pursue a fleeing suspect. If it is a minor traffic violation, once I get the plate # and some good video footage for evidence, I will terminate the pursuit. If it is a Felony, I have an obligation, better yet, it's my DUTY to capture the suspect.

This time last week I was riding my mountain bike home from work. A Corvette sped past me going well over 100 miles an hour with police chasing him.
The next day I found out he pulled into a car lot, the police sicked a dog on him who bit him. They shot out his windows with a beam bag gun, and one officer fired a live round at him. The man did point a shot gun at an officer. Eventually the story went the he took his life in the car.
This is an event that is current and real to me. I think the police should not actively pursue a suspect in the middle of town. Why not get his license plate number, and pick him up at home?
The situation could have been handled better, but I will be the first one to admit the guy was completely out of control. He needed to be handled, and I wouldn't have wanted to be the one to have to chase him. But it is a sad result that isn't as glamorous as the chase scenes on Spenser For Hire.

That expired sticker was only the initial reason for the stop, genius. The reason for the chase is that they ran. You don't run for an expired sticker. You run we want to know why. Wanna talk about risking lives? Walk around wearing a badge in public for ten minutes. It'll be the longest ten minutes of your life. Some have not lasted that long.

Police officers are permitted to pursue an offender for a reasonable distance, but usually doesn't turn into a full-blown pursuit unless the officer believes a felony has been commited or that there is risk of harm to life. if cops didnt have the ability to chase someone down for running a stop sign, what makes you think the guy doesnt run you over at the next stop sign.
Also, most states have a law that makes it a felony to flee from the police.

Why would someone elude police on a high speed chase for a tail light out? or for running a stop sign? Chances are, they run because they have warrants, drugs, weapons, or have just commited a felony. The person doing the running is the one endangering lives, not the police officer.

As one guy said.... once they have your plate number they will find you eventually.
Chases may become something of the past. I was reading this article and though it was for stolen cars I can see how it might extend to other things one day.
Basically w. On Star if a car is stolen and reported the GPS finds the vehicle and go after it. First they would attempt to pull it over. They can have the all of the lights and flashers turned on so it is easy to identify and follow. And ultimately the police can have the engine turned off if necessary.

It's cool that these PIGS neglect to mention that ahy crime that occurs during these chases is attributed to the person who runs. If a cop kills someone in the guise of pursuit they don't care that is just another thing they type in the papers. Gotta get my 15 mins. in the newspapers huh? Talk about a lack of accountability!!!

I'm sorry james b. The guy said he only chases for a felony. Can't have fun while working? When I hit a door on a search warrant it was fun, when I chase a guy that was shooting at other and me, either on foot or in a vehicle, I was having fun.
If you cannot have fun at work why go to work, especially a very unhealthy job like being the police.
Oh, ya in think in my 30 years of public service I have always been aware of public safety, that is what I did and I had fun.

final year a small baby became into hit in Tulsa via illegals that fled the scene and the police had to pursue. that's ordinary of them, no appreciate for regulation. it may be unlawful to sell a automobile or own loan a automobile to an unlawful alien. Make it a criminal to take action, and get them off the roads.

yea just throw out police chases all together because its dangerous, unlike everything else the police do. So what if he robbed a bank and killed two tellers, the public deserves to be safe from a speeding cop car. How is a cop suppose to know if they are running because they have 5 kilos of cocaine or because they don't have a license and they are just stupid?
