yes yes I know I shouldn't of put water colors down on canvas, but it's done so onto the solution. This painting has both water colors and acrylics and I'm looking for a matte finish. I've thought about varnish or just a spray on matt protective, but I'm worried about the effects on the watercolors. Please help!!

Despite the comments to the contrary, it works fine if you're careful about it. I've done some extremely complex images that way and sometimes it's the only way to get the effect {or Winsor & Newton color} you're looking for.

If you have an airbrush that's the simplest solution... spray a few quick coats of medium on it and it will seal beautifully. Otherwise you'll have to go with canned stuff and possibly brush a bit of medium over that.

Watch for bleeding if you brush anything over it... If there's a reasonable amount of medium in the watercolors they may already be sealed and you won't have to worry about it. You may lose some of the delicate stuff but you should be able to fix that fairly simply with acrylic.

It takes a bit of practice to learn to work with them but once you get used to it you'll find it's not all that difficult. Try using a bit of medium in the mix in the future.

No problem. chances are very high you can varnish the painting like normal but if you are in doubt or have rather thick layers of watercolor you should do a follows:

Use a spray can of acrylic varnish. Put your canvas down. Spray lightly...just dust the canvas. Repeat this at least 5 times with 5 minutes in between.

When done with 'dusting' finish the like you are used to doing with a total layer of normal applied varnish.

I have a friend who uses watercolors on a canvas, when she is done she sprays it with "Preserve it" a sealer that does not change it, it merely keeps it from discoloring with age. It works for her anyway. Most artists will do the "it can't be done" jjust because someone says it can't be done. once used on a canvas watercolors, fabric paint, and acrylic! LOL now that was a wild painting!!

Amanda,my avatar is a black hole! I liked to draw as a child, but I'm not a good painter. If I had skill at this craft,I would paint people. I'm fascinated with different people and the things they do. I also like the beach at sunset. If I could immortalize anything with a paint brush,it would be people and sunsets. Maybe people AND sunsets, that would be,as you say, killing two birds with one stone. I wish I could do that.

I would just leave it alone personally...frame and enjoy it. Anything you put on it whether it is varnish or spray you are running the risk of the watercolours running.

Well....I'd look for an all-purpose spray, if you can find any. I'd actually suggest going to an art store and asking them what's best.
