Probably because preachers are careful not to encourage church members to read the ENTIRE Bible, lest they find out what is REALLY in there! They just concentrate on the warm & fuzzy parts, so to keep the collection plate full.
The Bible is actually THE most violent, immoral fiction ever written. Read it and see.

You're taking in too much at once! Slow down, relax....Okay?
Now you have the rest of all eternity to learn it.
In the here and now all you can do is study the books in an orderly fashion on a daily basis.
Look, I've read the Bible four times so far, and in the first complete reading I read about Gibeah's crime in the book of Judges, and I wondered astonished about the priest!!! It confused me...this morning I read it for the fourth time and I got my answer about the priest, three years after the question.
The Bible made an easy sense to me as well when I was a child, but in growing into adulthood you're questions become a lot deeper than that of a six year old. Confusion will set in.
But do not dismay the answers will come and the confusion will dissipate.

I recommend that you read the King James version Bible because the changes made in the other versions of the Bible cause confusion. For instance, in the King James version Bible it is obvious weather God is speaking to an entire group of people or one specific person because it uses a different word for YOU meaning the whole group and YOU meaning a specific person. In the modern translations it is hard to figure out who God is speaking to. And there other ways that the modern translations contribute to confusion.

I understand!!!
But you should understand that it is more then a book and you need to break it down into what is more and most important.
By logic if Jesus was God in the flesh then the gospels are more important then the rest.
To understand the Old Testament you can best interpret the Gospels.
Start with the Gospels and major on John because he wrote to complete what the others left out.
Take your own understanding ahead of others opinions after you have read it throughly.
Know what is important in the Old Testament to get the feel of it.

Your awareness is growing!
Your consciousness is expanding!
You're maturing!
Be patient and ever observing, it's a good thing.
You're heart is reaching out for answers, it happens to all humans.
Trust in "God" and ask for the "Wisdom" that "God" graciously shares, to keep you on the straight and narrow path.
footnote* - When this occurs, go look at the sky, the birds, the trees, a river, the stars, the moon. Feel the wind, let your feet touch the grass, and be amazed that you are placed here to experience it, in all its beauty. And above all things, "Give Thanks", for the opportunity!
"Peace be always with you."

From the movie Dogma: "Faith is like a glass of water. When you're young, the glass is small, and it's easy to fill up. But the older you get, the bigger the glass gets, and the same amount of liquid doesn't fill it anymore. Periodically, the glass has to be refilled."

You can't understand why? When you were a kid the bible was like a fairy tale. Now that you are older and you see the fairy tale that you are supposed to believe is true!

The adult mind likes to interpret and hangs onto tradition. These impede scriptural understanding.

Been reading the Old Testament have we? It is truly a horrible faerie tale and I bet they didn't tell you a tenth of it when you were a kid. Just keep reading.

As the Bible points out, "Now we see dimly, as through a dark glass, but then we shall see face to face. Now we know in part, but then we shall know perfectly." and again, "Now are we sons and daughters of God, but it does not yet appear what we shall be like. But we know that when He shall appear, then we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He truly is."
