Jesus, there are all sorts of things you need to look out for.
You need to be able to judge the quality of any repairs made to the car. You should be able to tell if the welding/metal work is quality and properly done. Know if the replacement panels used are factory correct or not and installed correctly.
Check the vin and/or data plate, and follow guides available to see if the engine/tranny & other options (such as a GT package on a mustang) came with the car when it left the factory. Numbers matching on the engine/body is also important.
You should decide on a car you want, then research it as much as you can before you even start looking.

When inspecting any antique car it's important that as many of the parts are dead original and in as good shape as possible. Specifically: body and frame condition. The accessories should match the year make and model of the car. The engine block, cylinder heads and transmission, front and rear suspension, wheels - all should be the proper ones for the car your looking at. If you subscribe to Hemmings Motor News there will be specific books available concerning the car you're interested in.
