EVERY. SINGLE. Time someone walks into my house my dog NEEDS to have something in her mouth to show them. Doesn't matter if it's me, my parents, my brother, a friend, stranger... ANYONE. She'll grab the first thing she sees ro if there's nothing around, the person's shoe the second it's off their foot, then carries it around wagging not only her tail, but her entire body and making little happy yelping/barking noises. It's very cute but sometimes she goes on for three-five minutes and it can get to be irritating. She's a two year old Hovawart who are NOT retrievers (bred for guarding) so I don't know where on Earth this behaviour comes from. It's not doing any harm though, and it's pretty endearing so I wouldn't worry about it.

Sorry I'm no help though, just wanted to tell you that there are other dogs like yours! :)

hey courtney, i have no clue. but my boy gunnermack does the same thing, only with a painters rag. he cannot greet anyone without it. it's too funny. it's almost like he goes into a submissive i'm glad your home thing. but he's walking around, does that make sense? i hope so, cuz i work 12 hours a day, and sometimes what i'm thinking doesn't come out right. and he's a pit.
