You can use Revolution. It is a once a month topical, but it is alcohol based so it dries much faster and doesn't have an oily residue. It also has a heartworm preventive in it so you need to make sure your dog is current on her heartworm test and get it from your vet.
Other than that, the Frontline spray and spot on is the best for both pests together. You can just put the drops on the skin, then wait a day and comb the residue out.
The spot on you get from the pet store or grocery store is just cheap pesticide. It is greasy and spreads out a lot, but doesn't work well at all. Advantage or Frontline are from your vet and work better.

Collars don't only look trashy, they don't work. So stay away!
Spot-on products are supposed to go on the skin of the dog, not the fur - if you get someone to hold puppy still so you can get it all on the skin (might need to put it in a few different places) there's no need to end up with greasy fur.
Do NOT use treatments available in stores and supermarkets, because they don't work. Veterinary spot-ons like Frontline and Advantix are both safe and effective (Revolution doesn't treat ticks), and in fact the only way to properly deal with fleas. You won't find anything useful in stores, or in home remedies. Same goes for house sprays, which you'll need.

I use frontline on my dog and it doesnt make his coat oily or nasty. You should give him frontline. Who cares if its oily for a few days. Would you rather have him with lime desease or your house filled with fleas? Your dog not only will be really itchy, but he can get really really sick from ticks. Ticks cary alot of diseases and they also occasionally suck on humans :) my dog had ticks because we forgot to give him the Frontline and i woke up one day, and it was on my arm sucking away!!
Also if your dog is of a collie type, they can't take a certain heartworm medicine. I don't know what it is but research it if you ahve a collie. Dont use Revolution if it is a collie until you check out that drug

I use Frontline on my 15 week old pup and for my older dogs I use K9Advantix. The slick of oil you see is necessaary for the application to work. You can put up with it for a few days anthen give the dog a bath. Nothing else will work as well as the ones I have already mentioned.

Go to your vet an ask. theyre are many choices. I use flealine or w/e its called. it works with my dog, if u want to remove ticks, put rubbing alcohol on the tick and wear rubber gloves. then pull out. it does hurt so after u pull it out so dab it with a cotton ball that has a little rubbing alcohol on it. make sure it gets the lime disease shot too tho!! and i use this thing (im sorry i forgot the name) put its comes in this little 1 by 1 slit with very little liquid. u put it on top of their should blade and then u cnt touch it until it dies

I use revolution. The key is getting all of it on the skin and not the hair. My vet told me to do mine at night so it would be gone by morning. It is too.
