My son has an old rifle of my Dad's and the stock is in ill repair. The gun as a whole is very worn and all we can read on the gun is the end of the word hardware co, then IXL, then St Louis USA This appears inside a square on the side of the gun near it's hammer. We are trying to figure out it's manufacturer.

For the trademark and maker question. Most hardware companies used to get manufacturers to put there label on to a gun manufactured regularly. I have a Sears Roebuck bolt action 12ga. That is actually a JC Higgins that was commissioned by Sears. If you can find out who actually manufactured the gun then you can find a new stock for it. If it is a bolt action Shotgun then it is possibly made by JC Higgins. Take it to a gun smith they can tell you exactly what it is, or go to the library and check out The Shooter's Bible or any gun related book you will probably find a picture matching what you have.

See the answer I gave in your sons posting above. As I told him I would not recommend shooting this without it being checked by a gunsmith first.

You can always have a competent Gunsmith make you a stock for it if you can't find one.*
