Why Does NASCAR insist on saying that Jeff Gordon is going for his 5th Nextel Cup Title, when even Jeff Gordon says that NO it's NOT his 5th Nextel Cup Title. It's his FIRST Nextel Cup Title. That he has 4 Winston Cup Titles. Why is Nextel so bent on trying to re-write history? Tony Stewart has made similar statements about how many championships He has too and exactly what they are.

I just call them Cup championships. Next year, it'll be the Sprint Cup - so whatever.

They also say that Richard Petty won 7 Winston Cups. That is a lie. He only won 4. He also won 3 Grand national Championships. He raced under all kinds of different rules systems and some seasons had as many as 62 races in them.

So, histroy has been being re-wrote long before Nextel/Sprint got involved.

I do not agree with the way it is but I can remember when the Winston series turned into the Nextel series they said that all the record and past winner would become so called owned by Nextel's because they are the top sponsor of the series.
I don't agree with it and I am really impressed that you are saying Gordon claims to his fame as Winston champ too. That makes me like him just a little bit now.

Even the drivers who won Grand National championships, like David Pearson and Richard Petty, are now called Nextel Cup champions, because Nextel owns the series sponsorship.
Nextel and Sprint are the same company, due to a merger last year. Nextel is now Sprint, just like Cingular is now AT&T

Nextel is the one who is putting up the money, so they get to re-write history. That's just the way it is. All the commentators are paid to call them Nextel Cups, thus that's what they are. It's just a sponsor. Just like Winston was a sponsor. Who knows, ten years from now, Jeff Gordon could have 8 Geico Cups. I could care less what they call it.

Well lets see the nextel cup title as we know now used to be considered or called the Winston cup do you understand they changed the name of the class because of the sponsor. So actually the name has been changed but its still the same honorable title!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is ridiculous. I used to get 2 free cartons of smokes back in the day went I went to the track. Now they give away a new phone bill and a few keychains. . WINSTON was racing. Nextel is trying to be an Autosport. ... Its all good still I guess. But I agree with you.

It's his 5th Cup Title, or his 5th Championship. It's not his 5th Nextel Cup Title.

You kinda have a point.....The Browns dont say they won a Super Bowl because all they have won were NFL Championships........okay maybe not so good of an analogy but you get my point.......................I think there should be some kind of general term used for The Cup Titles like college football bowls....like the Sugar Bowl could be the Nokia Sugar Bowl for some years or something....or this year its the All State Sugar Bowl....but its still the Sugar Bowl......as long as NASCAR keeps switching its sponserships like this history is going to "re-write" itself based on who ever is the sponser of that time...

Yea I know.
Next year, say if Clint Bowyer wins cup this year they'll be saying Bowyer, going for his second ever Sprint Cup Championship, because next year is going to Sprint and be the first year and Bowyer ( not really just an example ) won the nextel...
they'll be doing it to him next year since it's going to sprint.
doesn't nextel get mad for them keep using sprint everywhere? i mean their still the sponsor and still under contract

Its all about money. Nascar has to bow down to Nextel so the money keeps rolling in. Look at all our Stadiums in this Country. It's hard to keep track of their names. Everything apparently has it's price. Lets hope Bill Gates doesn't want to have The United Gates Of America.
