Parvo virus is a very serious and sometimes fatal disease in puppies. You rarely see it in a dog over a year of age. Parvo is a virus that attacks the GI system. It causes vomiting and bloody diarrhea. When a puppy gets parvo, his white blood cells (which are suppose to fight infection) start dying off very quickly until they are almost completely depleted. As this occurs, the puppy is unable to fight off even the simplest infection, this is why many pups are put on antibiotics to try to keep any infection from occuring. Because the puppy is losign fluids from both ends, he becomes severely dehydrated, and without IV fluids and antibiotics there is a high risk of him not making it. There is no cure for parvo or any other virus, you just have to let the body ride it out while trying to provide supportive care. Parvo is very very contagious and can live in the ground for years. It is passed through the bloody stool, so any other puppy that comes in contact with the stool can become infected. It is very important to get a pup vaccinated for parvo at 6, 10, and 14 weeks for protection.

Parvo is a viral disease of dogs that attacks the lining of the digestive system. It affects puppies much more frequently than dogs. Symptoms include: diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy. Stools are liquid, bloody and foul-smelling. If you suspect your puppy/dog has parvo get him to a vet!!!

Parvovirus is a viral disease of dogs. It affects puppies much more frequently than it affects adult dogs.
it causes diarrhea (often bloody), depression and suppression of white blood cells -- which come from another group of rapidly dividing cells.
In very young puppies it can infect the heart muscle and lead to "sudden" death.
Its a very serious and deadly disease.
it is treatable.. but prognosis is usually "guarded" because it is so touch and go and death does occur in many instances.
This is why it is recommended to have your puppies vaccinated against parvo before they are exposed.
Parvo can live in the environment for up to 8 months or longer... so its easily spread.
Signs- Lethargy, bloody diarrhea, loss of appetite
