Just wondering what are some good things to do when severely depressed..... family, what little friends I do have, reading, crying, trying to stop thinking about things isn't working. I'm actually feeling worse, and am starting to feel like a zombie. I've never taken any medications, so I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. If so, what did you do to cope?

Thanks for all the quick responses. I've been through a painful breakup before after 7.5 years of dating and I went through it all natural, and I can honestly say it was the worst year of my life. This breakup(my second) is 1000x worse because we had a deeper connection, so I can't fathom going through this for 1 year straight or more.

You should see a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist, who will be able to give you good advice about what to do. It's natural to feel sad over a breakup, but when the sadness lasts for a long period of time or affects your life in unexpected ways, it can be a medical problem and should be treated like one. I wish you good health.

I would say no for sure. You have to learn coping skill in life, you can't just cover everything up with pills. Anti depressants are for people with clinical depression. You are on the right track with some parts. Reconnect with friends and family that you maybe didn't see very much when you were dating. Initiate activities. Call somebody up and say hey lets go do whatever. The best thing you can do is keep busy so that you don't constantly dwell on the negative. Sometimes you even need to literally talk to yourself and tell yourself that today I'm going to be happy. If you feel yourself slipping back into depression remind yourself out loud that you are not going to let it happen. I know it sounds corny and silly but it really works. Before you know it you'll be back on track and you'll be close to family and Friends again.

In the event of situational depression (aka because of a breakup) the best mode of treatment is actually therapy. Talking it out with an unbiased third party has the best success rates. And they can also evaluate whether you might actually need some medication to take the edge off for a while. And that is a real possiblity. People take meds for situational things all the time. Not enjoying the people or activities that you once did are signs of depression and it might be time to talk to someone about it. Good luck.

I would make sure to talk to your doctor first, but if you're feeling like you need some help getting over this you could certainly try an anti-depressant. I've never taken them but I know they can really help people. I think everyone feels the way you're feeling after a horrible breakup, and only time heals it, but I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one taking anti-depressants for that reason.

It's not a good idea, anti-depressants is an acdditing drug, and after a while of taking them, it's hard to come off of them, who knows how long you would be depressed for. Or maybe after a while your body might become imunne to them, so it's a very bad idea. Try to be more active, do stuff that you wanted to do, that you couldn't. It makes the time go back faster and helps with the healing prosess by keeping your mind on other things.

When my wife dropped dead from a brain aneurysm, the only thing I could do to cope was to get right back into my routine! My co-workers thought I was rushing it to come back so quickly. I knew that if I didn't that I would think out our 19 years together and probably go insane! We all deal with these things in our own way! Best to you! :-)=
